Sergio Aguero has praised Cole Palmer as “spectacular”, with the former Manchester City striker believing the midfielder’s move to Chelsea was exactly what he needed to become the standout player he is today.
Key Highlights
- Sergio Aguero has hailed Cole Palmer as “spectacular” and Chelsea’s best player.
- Palmer has recorded four goals and two assists in seven appearances this season.
- Aguero believes leaving Manchester City for Chelsea gave Palmer the playing time he needed to develop.
- The Argentine also stressed that Chelsea need a stronger structure behind their attacking players to avoid conceding more goals than they score.
Aguero Praises Spectacular Palmer
Aguero has revealed his admiration for Palmer while discussing the England international’s impressive form since leaving Manchester City for Chelsea. Speaking to Stake, Aguero pointed to Palmer’s current numbers, with the talented forward already registering four goals and two assists in seven appearances this season.
Palmer completed a £40 million move to west London in 2023 after struggling for regular opportunities under Pep Guardiola. Aguero, who played alongside him at the Etihad Stadium, believes the transfer ultimately gave Palmer the platform he needed to flourish.
“I played with Cole Palmer and I love him as a player. I think he’s spectacular,” Aguero said. “Moving to Chelsea has worked well because he needed to play. In my opinion, he’s Chelsea’s best player today.”

Palmer Needed the Stamford Bridge Move
Aguero believes Palmer’s success at Chelsea is closely linked to the opportunity to play consistently. At City, competition for places meant the midfielder found it difficult to secure regular minutes despite the quality around him.
“When I was there, he didn’t have many opportunities to play for City because there were many top-level players who were also in good form,” Aguero explained.
The former striker also highlighted Palmer’s ability to influence matches at any moment, regardless of Chelsea’s current position in the Premier League.
“He can score or provide an assist at any moment and make the difference,” Aguero said.
Chelsea are currently 10th in the Premier League, but Aguero remains impressed by what Palmer has produced individually under Xabi Alonso.
Aguero Assesses Chelsea’s Argentine Arrivals
Chelsea have spent close to £350 million on new recruits, bringing in players including Morgan Rogers, Joao Pedro, Emiliano Martinez and Valentin Barco. Aguero backed fellow Argentines Martinez and Barco to succeed but stressed that Chelsea need more than attacking quality to consistently produce results.
“[Palmer, Joao Pedro and Morgan Rogers] are good players, but even if you have an excellent front three, if the team isn’t solid in midfield or defence, the forwards can score three goals and the opposition will score four,” Aguero said.
He pointed to Barcelona, Real Madrid and Manchester City as examples of teams that paired outstanding attacking players with a reliable structure behind them.
“To sustain a front three that you know is very good, you also need a reliable structure behind them so that the team doesn’t suffer so much,” Aguero added.
What’s Next for Chelsea?
Chelsea will have an opportunity to respond this weekend after suffering a 3-0 defeat to Brentford in their previous match.
Xabi Alonso and his squad will host Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, with Chelsea looking to improve their defensive record, climb the Premier League table and turn their attacking quality into more consistent results.
