Malaysia’s preparation for the Thomas Cup in Horsens, Denmark, has taken an unexpected twist as Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin stages a strong comeback while Lee Zii Jia deals with a fresh injury. The contrasting fortunes of these two men’s singles players are shaping a dramatic fight for a spot in the national squad.
Aidil Sholeh, ranked world No. 52, had been sidelined by a back strain sustained at the Thailand Masters in January, raising concerns about his form. After weeks of focused rehabilitation, including intensive court training, running, and weight sessions, he returned to full team training at the Academy Badminton Malaysia last Monday. His resurgence has impressed the coaching staff and placed him firmly in contention for the Thomas Cup squad.
National coach Nova Armada expressed relief at Aidil’s recovery, noting that the player had fully regained fitness two weeks ago. Armada has been coordinating closely with men’s singles coach Tey Seu Bock, who is closely monitoring Aidil’s progress. “I hope he will make the most of the opportunity and claim his spot in the final squad,” Armada said, signaling confidence in the player’s readiness.
The Thomas Cup, running from April 24 to May 3, will see Malaysia field a mix of seasoned athletes and emerging talent. World No. 23 Leong Jun Hao and world No. 38 Justin Hoh are expected to secure their spots, while Aidil’s recent form may earn him a place as a key backup or even in a starting role. He previously made his Thomas Cup debut in 2022, gaining valuable international experience.
Meanwhile, the team’s dynamics are complicated by Lee Zii Jia’s ongoing injury issues. The former World No. 8 and current world No. 80 was absent from a recent training session due to a fresh setback, delaying his preparation and casting doubt over his immediate readiness. BAM remains hopeful that Zii Jia will recover in time to lead the squad, as his presence is crucial for Malaysia’s medal ambitions.
With the tournament approaching rapidly, every training session now carries weight. The coaching staff faces a critical decision in balancing proven performers, rising stars like Aidil, and the recovery of Zii Jia. Fans eagerly await the final squad announcement, hoping for a combination of experience and emerging talent that can contend for Thomas Cup glory.
