Alex Marquez claimed pole position for the Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang, leading a strong qualifying performance that saw his older brother Marc Marquez secure a place alongside him on the front row.
The Gresini Ducati rider delivered a standout lap to take the top spot, putting himself in a strong position to challenge for another victory at a circuit where he enjoyed success in 2025. Marc, meanwhile, qualified second, giving the Marquez brothers a front-row lockout and setting up an intriguing battle for Sunday's race.
Marc's qualifying result also carries important championship implications. Holding a 19-point advantage in the standings, the factory Ducati rider has an opportunity to strengthen his title position, particularly following the unexpected withdrawal of rival Jorge Martin.
Martin was forced to leave the Malaysian Grand Prix after his injury prevented him from continuing the weekend. The championship contender had attempted to participate but ultimately returned home for further treatment, with his attention turning towards a possible comeback at the Qatar Grand Prix.
His absence leaves Marc with an opportunity to extend his championship lead, while also reshaping the battle among the remaining contenders.
Completing the front row is Pedro Acosta, who qualified third for KTM after an encouraging weekend that included his second career Sprint victory at Sepang. The Spaniard's performance puts him in a promising position to challenge the Marquez brothers in Sunday's race.
Ai Ogura led Aprilia's charge in fourth, ahead of factory rider Marco Bezzecchi in fifth and VR46 Ducati's Fabio Di Giannantonio in sixth.
Enea Bastianini qualified seventh, with Johann Zarco leading Honda's efforts in eighth. Franco Morbidelli and Francesco Bagnaia completed the top 10, securing ninth and 10th respectively.
The Malaysian Grand Prix will also feature a reduced grid of 20 riders following several withdrawals. Alongside Martin, Raul Fernandez was ruled out after struggling with an injury sustained during Friday's practice.
Fermin Aldeguer and Toprak Razgatlioglu were also absent, but their respective teams brought in replacements. Gresini enlisted Iker Lecuona, while Pramac called up Augusto Fernandez to fill in for Razgatlioglu.
With Alex Marquez starting from pole, Marc Marquez alongside him and Acosta completing the front row, Sepang is set for an exciting race. Marc's championship advantage adds another layer of importance to the contest, as he looks to capitalise on Martin's absence and move closer to securing the title.
