An Se-young has made badminton history after winning the Denmark Open to claim her 47th international title, surpassing the previous record of 46 held by Indonesian legend Susi Susanti for 27 years.
The South Korean defeated Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi 21-23, 21-14, 21-18 in the women’s singles final in Odense, recovering from a tight opening-game loss to secure the title in three games.
The victory puts An ahead of Susanti’s record, although the Badminton World Federation (BWF) notes that its international title records have been officially tracked since 1989 and do not include regional multi-sport competitions. Within that record, the 24-year-old has set a new benchmark for women’s singles.

An has consistently spoken about her ambition to achieve more in the sport while remaining focused on each match. “I want to make a lot of history and break records but I focus on one match at a time. That is my motivation,” she said.
Her latest achievement adds to an outstanding season. The world No. 1 has won six BWF World Tour singles titles this year, alongside major team and individual honours at the Asian Games, World Championships and Uber Cup. Her consistency has also kept her at the top of the world rankings for 105 consecutive weeks.
An’s only defeat of the season, according to the record outlined, came against China’s Wang Zhiyi in the All England Open final. Her Denmark Open triumph further underlines her ability to deliver under pressure against the world’s leading players.
By moving past Susanti’s long-standing mark, An has added another milestone to an already remarkable career. With her focus firmly on one match at a time, the South Korean will now look to build on her record-breaking achievement and continue her dominance in women’s singles badminton.
