A Star's Electric Welcome: Bright's Manila Mania
Just days after clinching the Women's Doubles title at the Hang Seng Bank Hong Kong Slam alongside Anna Leigh Waters, the 43-time PPA Tour champion dedicated two packed days to Metro Manila. She immersed herself in local pickleball communities, explored retail hubs, and concluded with a massive meet-and-greet at the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall, where an eager crowd awaited her.
Embracing the Local Vibe
Bright immediately captivated the audience, sending them into a frenzy with a resounding “Mabuhay! Salamat Manila! Salamat Pilipinas!” Her genuine embrace of Filipino culture was on full display as she donned a traditional pink Filipiniana bolero and happily recounted trying beloved street food like isaw and sisig.
Reflecting on her experience, Bright praised the “incredibly warm welcome” from the local pickleball community. She expressed her excitement at the cultural exchange, emphasizing the palpable passion for the sport in the country.
Philippines: The Global Pickleball Powerhouse?
When asked about the sport’s meteoric rise in Asia, Anna Bright didn’t mince words. She firmly believes the continent represents a massive spectator market, with potential for even faster growth than the United States, where other established sports already command significant attention.
The numbers emphatically support her vision. The Philippines has emerged as the world’s fastest-growing pickleball market, registering an astounding 1,213% increase in DUPR users over the last 12 months. This explosive growth underscores the country's unique position in the global pickleball landscape.
Beyond the Numbers: Bright's Vision for Asian Growth
Bright highlighted a key difference: “Here you have courts in malls, and there’s tons of people watching.” This accessibility and visibility are crucial drivers for the sport's expansion. She also offered invaluable advice to young Filipina athletes, emphasizing that “failing is part of the process” and an essential step toward success.
Her powerful message resonated deeply, encouraging resilience and determination—qualities vital for aspiring athletes in any sport.
Manila Open: The PPA Asia Tour Comes Home
Anna Bright's visit wasn't just inspirational; it was a pivotal moment for the sport. Her presence officially launched the exciting news of the Philippines hosting its first-ever PPA Asia Tour event: the **Manila Open**. This landmark tournament is scheduled for February 24-28, 2025, at the state-of-the-art **Helios SPARC facility** in Pasig City.
The rights to host this prestigious event were secured by Kosmas Athletic Ventures Corp. (KAVC). Their ambitious mission is to forge a comprehensive sports ecosystem in the Philippines, creating recreational spaces and community experiences that firmly place the nation on the global sports map.
Laying the Foundation for Future Dominance
Richard Bachmann, Head of Operations at KAVC and former Philippine Sports Commission chairman, underscored the immense significance of bringing a global star like Bright to Manila. He noted that Filipino fans previously had to travel abroad, often to Vietnam or Malaysia, to witness PPA Tour action. “But now, they don’t have to fly over. It’s here, we’re bringing the PPA for them,” Bachmann enthusiastically declared.
The Helios SPARC facility, operated by KAVC, will boast 14 professional-grade courts, including a championship center court designed to accommodate approximately 1,000 spectators. By 2028, the planned Helios Pickleball Manila will rise as another landmark, featuring 25 professional courts and a championship center court seating 2,000 fans. For a nation whose passionate fans have long yearned for home-turf professional events, the Manila Open and these ambitious developments can't come soon enough.
