Arthur Fils has powered his way into the Cincinnati Open final, and while his explosive groundstrokes continue to attract attention, it has been his improved serve that has quietly driven his breakthrough run.
The 22-year-old Frenchman will face Frances Tiafoe in the final with his first ATP Masters 1000 title within reach. Whatever happens in the championship match, Fils has already produced the best Masters 1000 run of his career.
Through five matches in Cincinnati, Fils has held serve 50 times from 53 service games, giving him an impressive 94.3 per cent hold rate.
That is a significant improvement on his 85.8 per cent mark this season and well above his career average of 82 per cent. The difference has been particularly important in tight matches, where protecting his serve has allowed Fils to put greater pressure on his opponents.
His second serve has also taken a major step forward.
Fils has won 61.7 per cent of points behind his second serve in Cincinnati, compared with a career average of around 51 per cent.
The improvement has made his second delivery much harder to attack and has allowed him to start more points on his own terms. With fewer opportunities for opponents to expose his second serve, Fils has been able to use his powerful baseline game more effectively.
There is also a clear link between his serving performance and his results this season.
In all nine of Fils’ completed defeats in 2026, he was broken at least three times. That statistic highlights just how important his service game has become to his chances of controlling matches.
His semi-final victory over Flavio Cobolli offered another example.
Fils was broken early and admitted that he felt some nerves at the start, but he quickly settled down. Once his serve found its rhythm, Cobolli struggled to create further opportunities, with Fils facing deuce in only one more service game for the remainder of the match.
That ability to recover under pressure has been one of the most encouraging aspects of his Cincinnati campaign.
Fils now has the opportunity to complete his breakthrough against Tiafoe, but he has already secured a major ranking milestone.
Regardless of the final result, Fils will rise to a career-high position of either No. 11 or No. 12 in the PIF ATP Rankings. He will also move into either sixth or seventh place in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin.
The progress marks a significant shift in the perception of Fils. His athleticism and powerful groundstrokes have long suggested that he has the tools to compete with the best, but his improved serving is giving him the consistency needed to turn that potential into results.
If Fils can maintain this level behind his first and second serves, his Cincinnati breakthrough could prove to be more than just one deep tournament run. It could be the moment he establishes himself as a genuine threat among the next generation of men's tennis stars.
