French tennis suffered an early disappointment at Roland Garros after Arthur Fils officially withdrew from the tournament ahead of his highly anticipated first-round clash with Stan Wawrinka.
The 20-year-old rising star was forced to pull out due to a back injury, ending hopes of a strong home campaign before it even began. Tournament organisers confirmed the withdrawal shortly before his scheduled opener in Paris.
Fils had entered Roland Garros as one of France’s brightest hopes following an encouraging season that saw him continue climbing the ATP rankings and establishing himself among the sport’s emerging young talents. His absence leaves a noticeable gap in the men’s draw and disappoints local supporters eager to see the Frenchman perform on home soil.
The injury concern had already surfaced during recent tournaments, where Fils struggled physically at times. Although he attempted to manage the issue ahead of the French Open, the problem ultimately proved too serious to continue.
For Wawrinka, the withdrawal means the former Roland Garros champion advances without playing. The Swiss veteran, who lifted the Coupe des Mousquetaires in 2015, had been preparing for what many expected to be one of the standout first-round matches of the tournament.
Fils’ withdrawal also highlights the physical demands of the clay-court season, particularly ahead of a Grand Slam where matches can stretch over five sets in difficult conditions.
Despite the setback, the Frenchman remains one of the ATP Tour’s most promising young players, and attention will now shift toward his recovery and whether he can return in time for the grass-court season.
Meanwhile, Wawrinka moves into the second round with extra rest as the 40-year-old continues another remarkable chapter in his long career.
