Low Zi Yu celebrated her historic Asian Junior mixed doubles title with Ahmad Redzuan Zulwaqqarizal, but the Malaysian teenager admitted she was left with mixed emotions after narrowly missing out on a second gold medal in Japan.

Winning Malaysia's first Asian Junior mixed doubles title in 19 years should have been the perfect ending for Low Zi Yu, but the teenager returned home with mixed emotions after narrowly missing out on a second gold medal.

Zi Yu partnered Ahmad Redzuan Zulwaqqarizal to capture the mixed doubles crown at the Asian Junior Championships in Yatsushiro, Japan, ending Malaysia's long wait for the title with a straight-games victory over China's Zheng Weigang and Li Menghan in the final. It was also only the country's second Asian junior mixed doubles title after Tan Wee Kiong and Woon Khe Wei's triumph in 2007.

The 16-year-old, however, had hoped to complete a golden double. Her campaign in the girls' doubles ended in the semi-finals, where she and Genevie Lim settled for bronze after losing to Japan's Aoi Banno and Yuzu Ueno.

Despite the disappointment, Zi Yu described the tournament as a valuable learning experience and said she was grateful to leave Japan with a continental title.

The mixed doubles success marked another milestone for one of Malaysia's brightest junior prospects. Together with Redzuan, Zi Yu displayed composure throughout the tournament and delivered under pressure in the final to secure a breakthrough victory for the national team.

Her achievements were even more impressive considering she had entered the championships chasing medals in two disciplines. Earlier in the tournament, Zi Yu guaranteed Malaysia at least two medals by reaching the semi-finals in both mixed doubles and girls' doubles.

While missing out on the girls' doubles title was a disappointment, the Asian crown provides a significant confidence boost ahead of the World Junior Championships later this year.

With an Asian junior title already in hand and her development continuing on an upward trajectory, Zi Yu has firmly established herself as one of Malaysia's leading young badminton talents and a player to watch in the years ahead.
