The Atlanta Hawks are reshaping their front office ahead of the upcoming NBA season, announcing the promotion of Peter Dinwiddie to executive vice president of basketball operations. The team has also brought Tim Bontemps into the organisation as a strategic advisor, while Maxwell Kupchak has been promoted to director of cap strategy and player personnel.

Peter Dinwiddie Earns Executive Vice President Promotion
Dinwiddie joined the Hawks before last season as senior vice president of strategy and analytics after spending five years with the Philadelphia 76ers, where he served as executive vice president of basketball operations.
Before joining Philadelphia, Dinwiddie spent 14 seasons with the Indiana Pacers, beginning in 2006 in the inside sales department before moving into basketball operations.
During his time with the Pacers, he held several senior positions, including director of basketball administration, vice president of basketball operations and senior vice president of basketball operations. A native of Indianapolis, Dinwiddie graduated from Indiana University in 1999 before earning his degree from the New England School of Law in 2004.
Tim Bontemps Joins Hawks as Strategic Advisor
The Hawks have also added Tim Bontemps to their front office as a strategic advisor following more than eight years covering the NBA for ESPN.
Bontemps was a familiar voice across the league during his time at ESPN, where he also co-hosted The Hoop Collective podcast. His coverage focused heavily on team strategy, player movement and league-wide trends, ranging from breaking news to deeper reporting on the NBA’s business both on and off the court.
Before joining ESPN, Bontemps spent time at The Washington Post from 2015 to 2018 and the New York Post from 2007 to 2015. He graduated from St. Bonaventure University.
Maxwell Kupchak Takes on Expanded Role
Meanwhile, Maxwell Kupchak has been promoted from coordinator of cap strategy and player personnel to director of cap strategy and player personnel.
Kupchak is entering his fourth season with the Hawks organisation. Before arriving in Atlanta, he spent four seasons with the Charlotte Hornets, where he began as a video room operations assistant. He subsequently moved into the front office as a basketball assistant before becoming manager of basketball operations and scouts.
The Los Angeles native graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he played four years on the men’s basketball team and appeared in 97 career games.
Hawks Strengthen Basketball Operations Team
The three moves give the Hawks additional experience across basketball operations, strategic planning and player personnel as the organisation continues to build its front office. Dinwiddie’s promotion, Bontemps’ arrival and Kupchak’s expanded responsibilities bring together established basketball operations experience, league-wide insight and specialised expertise in cap strategy and personnel.
