Denmark’s ambitions for a strong run at the 2026 Thomas Cup have been significantly affected by the sudden retirement of Viktor Axelsen, who has stepped away from professional badminton at the age of 32 due to ongoing back issues.
Axelsen’s exit removes Denmark’s most reliable point scorer and a key leader within the squad, creating a major gap in both performance and experience ahead of the tournament in Horsens from April 24.
With his absence, responsibility now shifts to Anders Antonsen, who is expected to lead the singles department. He will be supported by Rasmus Gemke, Ditlev Jæger Holm, and Magnus Johannesen, while Denmark’s doubles strength will rely heavily on established pairs such as Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen.

Men’s singles coach Hans-Kristian Vittinghus, a member of Denmark’s 2016 Thomas Cup-winning team, has urged his players to focus on mental strength as much as technical ability. He stressed that high-pressure matches, particularly the third singles rubber, are often decided by composure rather than skill alone.
Vittinghus also acknowledged that this current Danish squad does not carry the same overall strength as past generations, pointing to recent inconsistent results, including a loss to France in the European Team Championships. However, he remains confident that the unpredictable nature of team events means Denmark cannot be ruled out entirely.
Playing at home is expected to provide an advantage, with strong crowd support in Horsens potentially lifting the team in key moments. Even so, the loss of Axelsen has clearly changed expectations, with Denmark now seen as challengers rather than favourites.
Beyond the immediate tournament, Danish badminton is also in a rebuilding phase. The focus is shifting towards developing younger players who can reach world-class level in the coming years, with the Thomas Cup viewed as part of a longer-term transition process rather than a guaranteed title push.
