Francesco Bagnaia returned to winning ways on Saturday by claiming victory in the Brno Sprint, securing his first MotoGP win of the season and reigniting his championship challenge.
The Ducati factory rider made the perfect start from the front row, taking the lead from polesitter Ai Ogura into the opening corners and controlling the race from the front despite constant pressure behind him.
Bagnaia's victory was made even more impressive by Ducati's tyre strategy. Alongside teammate Marc Marquez, he opted for the soft rear tyre, while most of the leading contenders, including Ogura, chose the medium compound in the hot and demanding conditions.
The gamble paid off as Bagnaia carefully managed tyre wear throughout the sprint distance, maintaining his pace to secure a long-awaited return to the top step of the podium.
Ogura delivered another standout performance to finish second for Trackhouse Racing, while Marquez completed the podium after a measured ride that kept him firmly in contention throughout the race.
The sprint also produced a significant twist in the championship battle. Series leader Marco Bezzecchi crashed out for the fourth time in a sprint race this season, leaving the Aprilia rider without points on Saturday and opening the door for his rivals to close the gap.
Jorge Martin took full advantage of the opportunity. Despite a challenging weekend that saw him miss direct qualification to Q2, the reigning world champion fought his way through the field to finish fifth, reducing Bezzecchi's championship advantage to just 15 points heading into Sunday's Grand Prix.
Fabio Di Giannantonio secured fourth place after a consistent race, while Raul Fernandez produced one of the standout performances of the afternoon. Less than two weeks after undergoing surgery for appendicitis, the Trackhouse Aprilia rider battled through the physical challenge to finish sixth.
The race also saw several riders caught out by the demanding Brno circuit. LCR Honda rookie Diogo Moreira crashed while running in a promising third place during the opening lap, ending what had looked like a potential podium challenge.
Enea Bastianini, Fermin Aldeguer and Brad Binder completed the points-paying positions in a race that featured six retirements and tested riders' tyre management and concentration from start to finish.
With Bagnaia back in victory lane, Bezzecchi losing valuable points and Martin closing in, the MotoGP title fight has tightened once again ahead of what promises to be a crucial Sunday showdown in Brno.
