Ben Shelton has stepped up his US Open campaign in emphatic fashion, cruising past Stefanos Tsitsipas to reach the quarter-finals and set up a blockbuster meeting with defending champion Carlos Alcaraz.
After battling through four-set matches in each of his opening three rounds, Shelton finally found his best tennis on Arthur Ashe Stadium. The American needed just one hour and 51 minutes to defeat former world No. 3 Tsitsipas and book his place in the last eight.
The victory marks Shelton's sixth Grand Slam quarter-final and his second at the US Open. He reached the semi-finals in New York in 2023 and is now showing signs that another deep run could be possible.
His route to the quarter-finals has also been impressive. Before facing Tsitsipas, Shelton had battled past Tallon Griekspoor, Hubert Hurkacz and Denis Shapovalov, with all three matches going to four sets.
This time, there was no such drama.
Shelton immediately imposed his power and aggressive style on Tsitsipas, leaving the Greek struggling to find a response. The American's serve and heavy groundstrokes kept him in control as he raced through the opening two sets.
Tsitsipas, who had arrived in New York with some encouraging results after victories over Arthur Fils, Lloyd Harris and Jiri Lehecka, was unable to reproduce that form against Shelton.
The situation became even more difficult when medical staff attended to Tsitsipas while he was trailing 2-6, 2-5.
Shelton remained focused and quickly took advantage when Tsitsipas dropped serve early in the third set. From there, the American never looked in danger of surrendering his advantage and completed a convincing straight-sets victory.
For Shelton, the result represents another step in his development as a Grand Slam contender.
The 22-year-old has already shown that he can compete with the world's best, but his latest performance demonstrated a greater level of control and consistency. Instead of relying solely on his explosive power, Shelton managed the match from start to finish and gave Tsitsipas very few opportunities to change the momentum.
Now comes an even bigger challenge.
Standing between Shelton and a place in the US Open semi-finals is Alcaraz, who has also been in commanding form at Flushing Meadows.
The defending champion booked his quarter-final spot with a straight-sets victory over Tommy Paul. Despite entering the tournament without playing a competitive match since April, Alcaraz has shown little sign of rust and has moved through his draw with confidence.
The Spaniard also holds a perfect 3-0 record against Shelton in their previous meetings. Their most recent encounter came at Roland Garros, giving Alcaraz the clear historical advantage heading into their latest showdown.
However, Shelton arrives at this meeting in a very different mood.
The American has gained momentum with every round and will have the home crowd behind him when he walks onto Arthur Ashe Stadium. More importantly, his performance against Tsitsipas showed that he is capable of matching elite opponents when he combines his power with greater consistency.
Alcaraz may have the head-to-head advantage and the experience of defending his title, but Shelton has already demonstrated that he cannot be overlooked.
With two of the game's most explosive young stars now set to meet in the quarter-finals, the battle between Shelton's power and Alcaraz's all-around game could become one of the most anticipated matches of this year's US Open.
