Matteo Berrettini turned heads on Wednesday at the Rolex Monte‑Carlo Masters by routing World No. 10 Daniil Medvedev 6‑0, 6‑0 in just 49 minutes to reach the third round. The result marked an exceptionally rare “double bagel” against a top‑10 opponent and was the first time in Medvedev’s career that he failed to win a single game in a tour‑level match.
Berrettini’s performance was decisive from start to finish. He maintained pressure early, converting multiple break opportunities while Medvedev struggled to find rhythm, finishing with a high unforced error count and only a handful of points won. Berrettini lost very few points on his own serve and never faced a break point in either set.
Speaking after the match, the Italian described the result as one of his best performances, noting that he barely missed any shots and executed his game plan efficiently against a tricky opponent.
For Medvedev, the shock defeat was compounded by visible frustration during the match. At times he smashed his racket in anger, a reaction that drew attention from fans and commentators.
The loss ends Medvedev’s run in Monte Carlo and hands Berrettini a boost as he advances to face the winner of the upcoming match between Joao Fonseca and Arthur Rinderknech in the round of 16.
Such a dominant scoreline at this level is uncommon and will be one of the standout results of the clay season, highlighting Berrettini’s potential threat on the red clay despite his lower ranking.
