Marco Bezzecchi has been ruled out of the German Grand Prix after suffering a fractured left clavicle in a heavy crash during Saturday's qualifying session at Sachsenring.
The Aprilia rider crashed during Q2 after a highside under braking for Turn 7, bringing an early end to what had been a promising qualifying run. Bezzecchi was thrown from his bike and tumbled through the gravel before getting back to his feet, although he was visibly struggling as he left the circuit with the assistance of marshals.
Medical examinations at the circuit confirmed a complete and displaced fracture of his left clavicle. The injury requires surgery, forcing the Italian to withdraw from the remainder of the German Grand Prix weekend.
Bezzecchi has since returned to Italy, where he will undergo an operation performed by Dr. Giuseppe Porcellini as he begins his recovery.
The crash was especially disappointing after Bezzecchi had shown encouraging pace in the early stages of Q2, briefly holding seventh place before the accident ended his session.
The injury is the latest setback in what has been a difficult campaign for the Aprilia rider. Earlier this season, he was taken out in Hungary, missed the Czech Grand Prix due to a penalty, and also required medical attention following a crash at the Dutch Grand Prix. Those incidents had already cost him valuable championship points and saw him surrender the championship lead after failing to score at Assen.
While the clavicle fracture is a major blow to his title challenge, the upcoming MotoGP summer break offers valuable time for rehabilitation before the championship resumes. Aprilia will now hope Bezzecchi can make a successful recovery and return to racing as soon as possible.
