Crutchlow Returns as Zarco Sidelined for Mugello Comeback
Castrol Honda LCR has confirmed that former LCR rider Cal Crutchlow will replace Johann Zarco for the Italian Grand Prix, as the Frenchman prepares to undergo surgery and continues his recovery.
The move marks a meaningful reunion between Crutchlow and the team, with the Brit having previously raced for LCR from 2015 to 2020. During that spell, he delivered 12 podiums and 3 victories, including the historic 2016 Brno win, which remains LCR’s first-ever MotoGP victory.
A Familiar Face Returns to the Garage
Team Principal Lucio Cecchinello expressed full support for Zarco while welcoming Crutchlow back into the fold, highlighting both the emotional connection and racing experience he brings to the project.
"We are all with Johann Zarco and wish him a strong recovery. In our effort to replace Johann, we feel fortunate to be able to count on our former rider Cal Crutchlow, with whom we have shared many great moments and with whom we have always maintained a strong bond. We would like to thank him for his availability, and we will do our best to make the most of this time together while Zarco recovers.”
Crutchlow also shared his thoughts on the unexpected return, expressing both sympathy for Zarco and excitement at rejoining a familiar environment.
"First of all, I wish Johann Zarco a smooth recovery. As a rider, it’s never easy to face situations like these. As for this weekend, I have great memories with LCR; the years we spent together were amazing. So, when I received the call to replace Zarco, I felt privileged and honored, and I had to give it a try. We know it will be an intense weekend, but I’m ready to give my best alongside the rest of the team and make the most of it. Let’s see how it goes!”
Crutchlow Completes First Day Back at Mugello
Back in action at Mugello, Cal Crutchlow completed a solid Friday in his return to MotoGP machinery with Castrol Honda LCR. The British rider spent the day rebuilding rhythm, gathering data, and adapting to the Honda RC213V once again. He reported feeling comfortable on the bike overall, while noting that the physical demands of direction changes remain challenging.
Even so, Crutchlow delivered constructive feedback to the team and focused on steady progress throughout the day. Crutchlow ended Friday in 22nd place with a best lap of 1'48.088, continuing to build confidence ahead of the weekend’s remaining sessions.
“I Enjoy Riding the Bike”
“The truth is that it's been an intense day, but I enjoy riding the bike. I’m just not as strong as I used to be when changing direction. I’m happy with what we’ve done today. I know everyone in the box, and that makes things easier. My goal is to help the team as much as possible, do our best, improve lap by lap, and enjoy the weekend together.”
