Former Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick believes the club faces several major priorities as it prepares for the next phase of its rebuilding project at Old Trafford.
Carrick, who briefly managed United on an interim basis before moving into coaching roles elsewhere, shared his views on what the club’s next permanent manager must address to restore long-term success. According to him, stability and a clear football identity remain the biggest challenges facing the club.
Since the departure of legendary manager Alex Ferguson in 2013, Manchester United have struggled to maintain consistency despite several managerial changes and significant investment in the squad. While there have been occasional moments of progress, the club has continued to fall behind rivals competing for major honours.
Carrick believes one of the most important tasks for the next manager will be creating a structure that players can fully commit to over a long period, rather than constantly resetting the project every few seasons.
He also highlighted the importance of rebuilding confidence and mentality inside the dressing room, areas that many former players and pundits have criticised during United’s recent struggles.

Another key issue identified by Carrick is recruitment. Manchester United have spent heavily in the transfer market over the last decade, but inconsistent signings and short-term decisions have often prevented the squad from developing a balanced long-term core.
Carrick suggested the club needs greater clarity in the type of players being targeted, particularly individuals capable of handling the pressure and expectations that come with representing Manchester United.
The former England midfielder also pointed to the importance of reconnecting supporters with the team through performances, work ethic, and a more recognisable playing style.
Despite the challenges, Carrick remains optimistic about the club’s future and believes the foundations still exist for Manchester United to compete again at the highest level if the right leadership is put in place.
His comments come at a time when pressure continues to grow around the direction of the club, with supporters eager to see a return to sustained success both domestically and in Europe.
For many fans, Carrick’s observations reflect wider concerns surrounding Manchester United’s long-term planning, while also reinforcing the scale of the rebuild still required at Old Trafford.
