Another summer, another Chelsea move for a high-potential, young star. This one, though, might just be different. The Blues have sprung into life to hijack Inter's move for Atalanta prospect Marco Palestra, who is now set to become the first signing of the Xabi Alonso era in a deal worth a cool €55 million (£47m/$62m).

The Meteoric Rise of a Dynamic Talent

From Milan Prodigy to Bergamo Gem

Born in Buccinasco, Marco Palestra began his football journey with local club Assago. At nine, he joined Inter Milan's Accademia, but his stint was brief. Just a year later, at the age of 10, Atalanta recognized his potential and brought him into their renowned youth system.

Initially a left-sided midfielder, a tactical shift at Under-17 level saw him excel as an emergency right full-back. This accidental switch proved pivotal, becoming his primary position and highlighting his natural adaptability. Palestra swiftly climbed the ranks, impressing with 10 assists for the U19s in 2022-23, earning him a promotion to Atalanta's newly formed U23s.

While Palestra made his senior debut with a brief Europa League cameo for Atalanta in December 2023, consistent first-team opportunities remained elusive. A hamstring injury further hampered his progress after a short spell with the senior side at the start of the 2024-25 season.

The real turning point came with a loan move to Cagliari in the summer of 2025. This was where Palestra truly thrived, quickly becoming a starter and showcasing his marauding full-back style. Despite Cagliari's relegation battle, his performances shone brightly.

He demonstrated incredible versatility, operating as a right wing-back, right-back, and even left-back, contributing four assists throughout the 2025-26 campaign. A standout moment was his match-winning display against Fiorentina in January, where he assisted the opener and scored a cool finish in a crucial 2-1 victory. His stellar season earned him Serie A's Defender of the Year prize and his first senior caps for Italy in World Cup qualification play-offs.
