Cherki Still Has a Role to Play in France’s Quest for Global Glory
Rayan Cherki’s frustration is understandable, given the widespread praise he has received. His ability to produce moments of brilliance has even drawn comparisons to French great Zinedine Zidane, and he clearly feels ready to shine on football’s biggest stage.
However, Didier Deschamps cannot field every star at once, and patience is essential within such a talent-packed squad. At just 22 years old, Cherki’s opportunity will come both now and in the future, but he must also learn to prioritise collective success over individual ambition.
Cherki Behind Mbappe, Dembele, Olise & Barcola in France Squad
Despite an impressive debut season at Manchester City under Pep Guardiola, where he contributed to FA Cup and Carabao Cup triumphs and quickly became a fan favourite, Cherki faces intense competition at international level.
France are stacked with attacking talent. Captain Kylian Mbappe leads the line, supported by Michael Olise, Ousmane Dembele, and Bradley Barcola, all of whom occupy key forward roles for elite European clubs.
So far in the World Cup, Cherki has featured in all four matches but played only 55 minutes in total, starting each game on the bench. His most notable appearance came when he was introduced in the 85th minute of a 3-0 win over Sweden in the round of 32.
Cherki and Deschamps: Tensions Under the Spotlight
Following the victory over Sweden, Didier Deschamps went onto the pitch to congratulate his players. Cameras caught Cherki appearing to avoid direct interaction with his coach, offering only a brief handshake while also turning away to acknowledge the crowd and adjust his socks.
This sparked questions over possible tension within the France camp, drawing comparisons to the unrest of the 2010 World Cup, when internal conflict led to major disruption. However, former France striker Louis Saha insists there is no serious issue within the squad.
Saha described the situation as normal emotional tension rather than conflict, stressing that young, ambitious players often struggle when not playing regularly but can resolve such issues internally.
Cherki Still Has a Role to Play in France’s Future
Despite limited minutes, Cherki’s situation is not viewed as long-term concern. His talent and creativity continue to earn admiration, and expectations remain high that he will play a bigger role in France’s pursuit of global success.
At the same time, Deschamps must balance a squad full of elite attackers, meaning opportunities are limited. Cherki will need patience, maturity, and a focus on team goals — but his long-term importance to the national team remains widely recognised.
