Lee Chong Wei has defended the Badminton Association of Malaysia's hostel curfew regulations, insisting national players are given considerable flexibility while stressing that discipline remains essential for success at the highest level.

Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) performance committee chairman Lee Chong Wei has defended the governing body's hostel curfew policy, arguing that national players already enjoy greater flexibility than many of their international counterparts.

The former world No. 1's comments come amid ongoing discussions surrounding BAM's disciplinary measures and residential requirements for players based at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara.

According to Chong Wei, the rules are designed to promote discipline rather than restrict personal freedom. He pointed out that players are allowed to leave the academy daily, provided they return to the hostel by 10.30pm. Exceptions are also made for official functions, award ceremonies and other legitimate commitments.

The badminton legend added that players are free to return home on weekends, while married athletes are permitted to live outside the hostel altogether. He contrasted the arrangement with countries such as China, where national players are subject to much stricter residency requirements.

Chong Wei believes the measures strike a reasonable balance between providing athletes with personal freedom and ensuring they maintain the discipline required to perform at the highest level.

He also stressed that senior players carry an additional responsibility within the national setup. As role models for younger athletes, their behaviour and professionalism often influence the next generation of players progressing through the ranks.

"Whatever the seniors do, the younger players will follow," Chong Wei said, highlighting the importance of setting the right example within the national programme.

The latest comments reinforce BAM's firm stance on discipline following several recent misconduct issues involving national shuttlers. The association has repeatedly stated that professionalism, accountability and adherence to team regulations are essential components of player development.

While the hostel rules have sparked debate in some quarters, Chong Wei remains convinced that the current system is fair and flexible. For him, discipline is not about limiting players' freedom but about creating an environment that gives Malaysian badminton the best chance of producing future champions.
