Coco Gauff says she is optimistic about playing at the Miami Open after a nerve-related arm problem forced her to retire earlier this month at the Indian Wells tournament.
In Indian Wells, Gauff withdrew from her third-round match against Alexandra Eala when sharp pain in her left arm made it impossible for her to continue. She was trailing 6-2, 2-0 at the time, marking just the second time she has retired mid-match in her career. Medical scans later suggested the issue was nerve-related.

Speaking at a Miami Open media session, Gauff confirmed that discomfort still appears from time to time but says it is improving. She admitted that some days are better than others, but overall she believes she can compete without major limitations.
Gauff revealed she briefly considered skipping the Miami event because of the injury. However, the fact that it takes place in South Florida, near her home and with family likely to be in attendance, convinced her to play. The No. 4 seed acknowledged that Miami is a special tournament for her, one she has yet to win in six previous appearances.
In her opening match, Gauff is set to face either Elisabetta Cocciaretto or lucky loser Darja Semenistaja, giving her the opportunity to begin her Miami campaign on a positive note.
Overall, while the nerve issue remains a consideration, Gauff’s confidence and familiarity with competing at this level suggest she is ready to take on the challenge in front of a supportive home crowd.
