“Well-deserved award. I think it just sets the tone for his career,” Mavericks coach Jason Kidd said about Flagg winning Rookie of the Year.

Flagg Captures Coveted Rookie of the Year Title

The anticipation was palpable for Cooper Flagg, who admitted to feeling “nervous” awaiting the NBA Rookie of the Year announcement. Unlike previous awards, the Mavericks sensation learned of his triumph at the same moment as everyone else—a rare, high-pressure reveal for the young star.

Flagg’s victory makes him only the third Dallas Mavericks player in franchise history to claim the honour, joining elite company in coach Jason Kidd (1995 winner) and Luka Dončić (2019 winner). It’s a milestone that firmly places him within the franchise’s modern greats.

The race, however, was razor-tight. Flagg collected 56 first-place votes and 412 total points, narrowly beating his former Duke Blue Devils teammate Kon Knueppel, who earned 44 first-place votes and 386 points. The 26-point gap marks the second-smallest margin in ROTY history since the 2002–03 format change, highlighting just how competitive this rookie class truly was.

Rewriting the Rookie Record Books

While the voting was close, Flagg’s on-court dominance told a much clearer story. Selected No. 1 overall by the Mavericks, he delivered one of the most complete rookie campaigns in recent memory, combining scoring, playmaking, and defensive impact at an elite level.

Flagg's All-Around Brilliance

Flagg made history by becoming the first rookie since Michael Jordan to lead his team in four major statistical categories—points, rebounds, assists, and steals. That level of all-around control underscored just how central he was to Dallas’ identity throughout the season.

He also showcased explosive scoring ability, recording 40-plus points on four occasions. His standout moment came on April 3rd against the Orlando Magic, when he dropped 51 points, becoming the only teenager in NBA history to score 50 or more in a single game.

Knueppel's Long-Range Dominance

On the other side of the race, Kon Knueppel, drafted fourth overall by the Charlotte Hornets, carved out his own historic niche. He buried an impressive 273 three-pointers, leading the entire NBA in made threes and tying for 22nd all-time in a single season. His perimeter shooting helped lift the Hornets to a 44–38 record, securing only their second winning season in the past decade and reinforcing his value as a lethal floor spacer.

A Tale of Two Seasons in Dallas and Charlotte

Despite Flagg’s brilliance, the Mavericks endured a difficult year, finishing 12th in the Western Conference with a 26–56 record. Injuries played a major role, including issues involving star big man Anthony Davis, who was eventually traded to the Washington Wizards in February. Still, through the struggles, Flagg remained the bright spot—an emerging cornerstone in an otherwise turbulent season.

Eyes on the Prize: Playoff Aspirations for Dallas

Off the court, the bond between Flagg and Knueppel stayed strong. Flagg revealed that their conversations never once centred on the Rookie of the Year race, instead focusing on support and friendship built during their time at Duke.

Looking ahead, Flagg is already shifting focus toward growth and redemption. Reflecting on a tough debut season, he said, “All of that is in the past. I think it’s time to move forward,” signalling a clear intent to push for improvement next year.

Kidd's Vision, Flagg's Grit

Head coach Jason Kidd, himself a former ROTY, played a key role in Flagg’s development by entrusting him with point guard duties early in the season. Though challenging at first, the decision unlocked Flagg’s versatility and high basketball IQ.

Kidd praised his rookie’s mentality, noting, “He loves competition,” and highlighted his willingness to guard the opposing team’s best players every night. For Kidd, Flagg’s rookie year was nothing short of “remarkable.”

With both coach and player aligned in ambition, the expectation is clear: the Mavericks believe their young star has the tools to transform the franchise. If development continues on this trajectory, Flagg could soon be leading Dallas back into serious playoff contention.
