As Formula 1 heads into its August summer shutdown, Russell sits 59 points behind teenage Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli, who currently leads the drivers' standings.
A String of Setbacks Derails Title Charge
Speaking on the Up To Speed podcast, Coulthard looked back on Russell's turbulent first half of the season. Since his Melbourne triumph, the 28-year-old has been plagued by a series of costly setbacks, including technical issues in China, an unfortunate safety car in Japan, multiple penalties in Monaco, an engine failure while leading in Canada, and power unit troubles in Belgium.
His latest disappointment came at the Hungarian Grand Prix, where an anti-stall malfunction at the start effectively ended his race before the opening corner.
Coulthard: Momentum Has Shifted to Antonelli
Reflecting on Russell's difficult run, Coulthard admitted he was stunned by the sheer volume of bad luck the Mercedes driver has faced. "It's been a shocker. How much bad luck can one person have?"
Coulthard explained that while Mercedes must solve the reliability problems, Russell is also dealing with the mental challenge of seeing momentum swing away from him.
Comparing the situation to a tennis player missing an easy winning shot after overthinking the moment, Coulthard suggested Russell is no longer riding the wave of confidence that carried him at the start of the season. By contrast, Antonelli has been able to drive instinctively for much of the campaign, with reliable machinery helping him maintain his championship momentum apart from the setback in Barcelona.
Can Russell Still Fight Back?
Coulthard believes Russell's greater experience is both an advantage and a burden. While veteran drivers better understand the pressures of a championship battle, younger competitors often benefit from racing without overthinking the challenges ahead.
Despite the daunting 59-point deficit, Coulthard pointed to Max Verstappen's comeback last season as proof that championship recoveries are still possible.
However, he admitted Russell's situation is unlike anything he has seen. "As we know from Max Verstappen last year, it's still possible to come back from that points deficit. But listen, not even Sylvester Stallone would write a Rocky movie with that sort of comeback from all the punches that he's taken. So it's going to be a character-building year for George."
With the second half of the season still to come, Russell's focus will now shift to turning his fortunes around and keeping his championship hopes alive despite one of the toughest stretches of his Formula 1 career.
