Key Highlights
- Cal Crutchlow started 21st and climbed to finish 19th in the Assen Sprint.
- Strong opening laps saw the Castrol Honda LCR rider gain positions early.
- Tyre wear and high temperatures made race pace increasingly difficult.
- Clean, mistake-free ride delivered valuable data for the team ahead of Sunday.
Crutchlow Battles Through Demanding Assen Sprint
The British rider, stepping in as a replacement, approached the Saturday Sprint with determination on one of the most physically demanding tracks on the calendar. Despite a difficult grid position, Crutchlow made a positive start, immediately gaining ground and engaging in close battles during the opening laps.
Strong Start Gives Way to Tire Management Challenge
As the Sprint unfolded, conditions at Assen quickly became tougher. Rising temperatures combined with tyre degradation made it increasingly difficult to maintain consistent pace through the flowing, high-speed direction changes.
Crutchlow adapted by focusing on control and race management, riding defensively to protect position while avoiding costly mistakes. That approach allowed him to stay in contention and safely complete the Sprint without incident.
Valuable Mileage for Sunday’s Race
While the result did not bring points, the experience provided useful feedback for the Castrol Honda LCR garage as they continue refining setup direction for race day. Crutchlow remains optimistic heading into Sunday’s Grand Prix, highlighting both progress and the value of fighting in the pack under real race conditions.
“I struggled a bit today, but overall I’m improving. The changes of direction are really demanding, but I enjoyed the race because I was able to battle with other riders. I had to ride very defensively, which was a bit different. Let’s see how it goes tomorrow. We’re doing a good job and everyone is happy.”
