De Laurentiis Fires Back at De Bruyne
Speaking during a press conference on Thursday, Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis made it clear that players unhappy with the club’s direction are free to seek opportunities elsewhere. When asked about comments made by senior players De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku, the Napoli chief did not hold back, stating: “They have made statements that are either acceptable or unacceptable depending on your point of view. We’ll see what happens when we all get back to work. We’ll see what the new coach thinks of it. If someone has to leave, they will leave. What’s the problem? There are plenty of footballers in the world.”
Belgian Superstar Opens Up on Conte Friction
De Bruyne’s frustration reportedly stems from a tactical mismatch with Conte, despite the Italian coach having led Napoli to their fourth Scudetto only a year earlier. The playmaker featured in just 18 Serie A matches during the 2025–26 season and felt restricted by Conte’s rigid tactical system. He added that the team’s defensive setup limited attacking freedom and significantly shaped Napoli’s playing style under Conte.
When asked if he was pleased about the managerial change, De Bruyne responded candidly, saying: “For me, yes. As far as I am concerned, he was not obliged to stay. There were promises made last summer on how we would be playing, but in the end not much of it happened. Obviously it was difficult for me because Conte has a very different vision of football to mine. In truth, I never had the opportunity to play in my preferred position. In any case, I always tried to give my all for the team. We played very defensively. If you try to win every game by a one-goal margin with a 4-5-1 formation, you play a certain type of football. At the start of the season, we sat back even deeper.”
Striker Struggles Highlight Tactical Divide
De Bruyne also criticised Napoli’s lack of attacking output, indirectly referencing Romelu Lukaku’s struggles in front of goal. The situation surrounding Lukaku worsened after he reportedly defied club instructions during his injury rehabilitation period in Belgium, resulting in a €150,000 fine. Although the striker has since issued an apology, Napoli are reportedly open to selling him this summer for around €10 million, with interest coming from clubs in Saudi Arabia and Turkey.
