Deniz Undav's journey to the top has been anything but conventional. Released by Bremen as a youth for being "too small," he even worked in a factory during his teenage years while bouncing between clubs in Germany's lower leagues. His long-awaited breakthrough eventually came in Belgium, but his rise was still far from complete.
His 2022 move to Brighton & Hove Albion initially appeared to be a step too far. After a sensational season with Union Saint-Gilloise, where he scored 26 goals in 39 games, the leap to the Premier League proved far more challenging. Although many around the Amex believed he was the club's most natural finisher, his brilliance in training rarely translated into competitive matches.

During his early days at Brighton, Undav often looked overwhelmed by the demands of the Premier League. That confidence eventually paid off as Undav found his rhythm, scoring five goals in Brighton's final eight matches of the season, including a memorable strike in a 3-0 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates.
Undav later admitted it took him several months to fully understand De Zerbi's tactical demands, particularly the importance of making selfless runs for the benefit of the team. The move to Stuttgart transformed Undav's career. Forming a devastating partnership with Serhou Guirassy, the duo tore through Bundesliga defenses throughout the 2023-24 campaign. Undav finished the season with 18 goals and 9 assists, helping Stuttgart secure an incredible second-place finish—the club's highest league placing since 2007—and qualify for the Champions League for the first time in 14 years.
His impact convinced Stuttgart to make the deal permanent in August 2024, paying a club-record €32.6 million (£28m/$37m) to secure his signature. Sporting director Fabian Wohlgemuth believed the investment would pay off, and Undav quickly justified that faith.
Despite dealing with minor injury setbacks, he maintained his outstanding form during the 2025-26 season, producing 25 goals and 14 assists across all competitions under Sebastian Hoeneß. Only Bayern Munich's star-studded attacking trio recorded better numbers, while Undav's contributions helped Stuttgart qualify for the Champions League once again and reach a second consecutive DFB-Pokal final.
Germany's New Hero: World Cup Impact and Nagelsmann's Dilemma
Undav's relentless club performances eventually forced Julian Nagelsmann's hand. After missing the entire World Cup qualification campaign, the striker earned a recall to the Germany squad in March 2026.
He made an immediate impact, coming off the bench to score an 88th-minute winner against Ghana before adding two more goals against Finland. Those performances sparked widespread calls for him to start Germany's World Cup opener against Curacao. While Nagelsmann initially preferred to deploy him as a super-sub, believing his pace and finishing would be most effective against tiring defenders, Undav's relentless scoring form has made that stance increasingly difficult to maintain.
With three goals and two assists in just 56 minutes of World Cup action, the striker has emerged as Germany's most clinical attacking option. Nagelsmann admitted he is now seriously considering handing Undav a place in the starting XI, acknowledging that his outstanding performances have earned the opportunity while also weighing the value of preserving his game-changing impact from the bench.
