Arsenal have completed one of the summer's biggest transfers by bringing Bruno Guimaraes to the Emirates from Newcastle United in a £75m deal. The Brazilian international, who captained the Magpies to Carabao Cup success, was officially unveiled ahead of Arsenal's pre-season friendly against Borussia Dortmund.

Hamann Challenges Guimaraes' Elite Credentials
Yet despite Guimaraes' impressive reputation and leadership credentials, former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann believes the 28-year-old still needs to prove that he is worth the elite status attached to his name.
Speaking to Sports Mole, the 2005 Champions League winner acknowledged Guimaraes' importance to Newcastle but questioned whether he has consistently shown the quality required to be considered one of the very best.
"Bruno has been a big player for Newcastle, and he’s been the captain as well, led the way, led from the front," Hamann explained. However, his assessment became more critical when discussing Guimaraes' performances for Brazil. "But we’ve seen him in the World Cup. I think part of some of the biggest issues for the Brazil team were in the middle of the park. I think he’s got to prove that he really is top class."
Hamann also pointed out that Guimaraes' £75m price tag, while substantial, remains below some of the fees paid for other midfielders who moved during the summer, including Sandro Tonali and Elliot Anderson.
Reliable Player, But Can He Take Arsenal to Another Level?
For Hamann, the biggest question is whether Guimaraes can offer Arsenal the extra attacking spark required to break down stubborn defences. The former midfielder believes Guimaraes is dependable, accountable and capable of contributing goals, but wants to see him play with greater attacking ambition.
"What does he bring to Arsenal? Well, he can nick a goal. A very reliable player, always accountable," Hamann said. That could be particularly important for Arsenal after their struggles to produce enough goals from open play last season.
Hamann believes the Gunners relied heavily on set pieces and need more attacking contributions from midfield. "They would want some goals because what they lacked last season was goals from open play. Arsenal relied on set pieces most of the time."
Arsenal Want More From Their Midfield
Hamann believes Guimaraes will have no trouble finding his place alongside Declan Rice and Arsenal's other midfield options. However, he sees another level that the Brazilian must reach. "They’ve got some very good players in there with Declan Rice and a couple of others, but he’ll find his place."
The former Liverpool star added that Arsenal will want Guimaraes to become more adventurous from midfield and believes he has the ability to do exactly that. "But to call him top class, I think, is a bit premature. He’s a very good player. To show he’s top class, I think he’s got to prove it now at Arsenal."
Arsenal See Guimaraes as a Midfield Leader
Despite Hamann's reservations, Arsenal's hierarchy clearly views Guimaraes as a crucial addition to Mikel Arteta's midfield.
Sporting director Andrea Berta highlighted the Brazilian's mentality, quality and leadership after the transfer was completed, describing his arrival as another step toward strengthening the centre of the team. "We are delighted to welcome Guimaraes to our club. Bruno is a player with a great mentality and great quality, who will bring strong leadership to our squad."
Berta also pointed to Guimaraes' versatility, noting that he can operate both as a defensive midfielder and as a box-to-box player. "As we have all seen, Bruno can play as a defensive midfielder and as a box-to-box player. He combines quality with quantity, and has provided goals and assists for his team every year."
Brazilian Connection Helps Seal Arsenal Move
Guimaraes' move to north London was also helped by a familiar face. His Brazilian compatriot Gabriel Magalhaes played an important role in convincing the midfielder to make the move to Arsenal. The new signing also revealed that he received a message from Declan Rice, with whom he has previously had some heated moments on the pitch.
"Come here and please no more fights, now we’re friends," Rice reportedly told him. The message reflects the new dynamic between the pair as they prepare to become midfield partners rather than opponents.
Guimaraes Arrives at Arsenal With a ‘Warrior’ Mentality
During his unveiling, Guimaraes made it clear that he is not arriving at Arsenal simply to add another name to the squad. The Brazilian described himself as a "warrior" and outlined his ambitions to compete for major honours.
