Eogene Ewe’s rapid rise has earned the backing of Malaysia’s national coaching director Kenneth Jonassen, who believes the young men’s singles shuttler is ready to make his mark at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya this September.
Eogene has emerged as one of Malaysia’s most promising singles players after producing a series of impressive performances against higher-ranked opponents. His breakthrough has been highlighted by his straight-games victory over former world No. 2 Lee Zii Jia at the Korea Masters earlier this month.
The 21-year-old’s progress had already caught attention after he reached his first semi-final of the year at the Macau Open in June. During that run, he defeated several higher-ranked opponents, including Hong Kong’s Jason Gunawan, Malaysia’s Cheam June Wei and Singapore’s Teh Jia Heng.
Those results have strengthened Jonassen’s belief that Eogene deserves his opportunity on the Asian Games stage.
Eogene’s selection comes as Malaysia looks to build greater depth in the men’s singles department. His recent performances have shown that he is increasingly capable of competing against established names, rather than simply gaining experience against them.

His win over Zii Jia was another major step forward. Eogene produced a composed performance to beat his more experienced compatriot 21-17, 21-13 in the Korea Masters, underlining his growing confidence against top-level opposition.
The youngster has also benefited from his exposure to stronger opponents throughout the season. After his Macau Open run, Eogene said the experience of facing top-30 and top-50 players had given him greater belief and helped him identify areas of his game that needed improvement.
His development has been particularly encouraging given his relatively young age. Eogene has steadily climbed the world rankings while establishing himself as a regular contender on the international circuit.
Now, the Asian Games will provide the biggest test of his young career.
With Jonassen's backing and momentum building around him, Eogene will head to Aichi-Nagoya with an opportunity to prove that his recent breakthrough is more than a temporary surge.
