Will Buxton has urged Ferrari to retain Fred Vasseur as team principal, warning that replacing him would risk undoing the team’s recent progress

The Ferrari team principal hot seat is once again dominating Formula 1 headlines, with calls for stability clashing against speculation over a potential leadership shake-up.

Key Highlights

  • Will Buxton has labelled replacing Fred Vasseur at Ferrari as "absolutely ludicrous" amid Christian Horner rumours.
  • Ferrari's public statement of "full confidence" in Vasseur has ironically raised "alarm bells" for Buxton.
  • Vasseur has overseen gradual progress for Ferrari in the constructors' championship since taking charge in 2023.
  • Ferrari's history of dramatic leadership decisions has fuelled Buxton's concerns over another potential change.

Ferrari Reaffirms Full Confidence in Vasseur

Despite Ferrari issuing a statement reaffirming its "full confidence" in Fred Vasseur's leadership, speculation around the team continues. Links between Christian Horner, formerly of Red Bull, and the Maranello outfit gained traction after the Briton said Ferrari was the only team he would consider joining without an equity stake.

However, Formula 1 broadcaster Will Buxton has argued strongly against replacing Vasseur at this stage. Speaking on the Up To Speed podcast with David Coulthard, Buxton described the idea as "absolutely ludicrous."

Buxton's Warning: "Absolutely Ludicrous" to Replace Vasseur

For Buxton, replacing Vasseur would risk discarding the foundations the Frenchman has built at Ferrari. He argued that throwing away the team's progress would be a major mistake, particularly given the delicate process involved in developing a championship-contending operation.

Buxton also viewed Ferrari's public vote of confidence with skepticism. He pointed to the familiar sports-management cliché that receiving the "full backing of the board" can sometimes precede a dismissal, suggesting that the statement itself raised "alarm bells" for him.

Vasseur's Tenure: Building for the Future?

Since taking charge in 2023 after succeeding Mattia Binotto, Fred Vasseur has guided Ferrari through a fluctuating but generally improved run in the constructors' standings. The team finished third in his first season before climbing to second in 2024, ending just 14 points behind McLaren.

Ferrari then slipped to fourth in 2025, but has moved back to second in the 2026 championship, currently trailing Mercedes.

The Ferrari Enigma: Will History Repeat Itself?

Ferrari's history of dramatic and sometimes counterproductive leadership decisions remains part of the wider discussion. Buxton fears the team could once again make a major change that disrupts the progress already made under Vasseur.

For Ferrari, staying with Vasseur would represent continuity and a longer-term approach, while a leadership change would bring a new direction and potentially another period of rebuilding. With Christian Horner among the names linked to the team, the speculation adds another layer to an already closely watched situation.
