The high-speed incidents immediately raised questions about the reliability and stability of the new technology. With rotating rear wings becoming an increasingly important part of the 2026 F1 technical landscape, the crashes put additional scrutiny on the systems and their potential failure points.

The FIA quickly requested comprehensive data from both Red Bull and Ferrari to better understand the technology. Importantly, this was not a punitive measure or an immediate move toward banning the concept. FIA Verdict: The “Macarena Wings” Are Safe

One key concern was the possibility of a hydraulic malfunction leaving the rear wing stuck in an open position at high speed. The FIA also needed to ensure the wing could close extremely quickly when required without creating instability or negatively affecting the car.

With those safety considerations addressed, the FIA has effectively given the rotating rear wing concept the green light to remain part of Formula 1's aerodynamic arms race.

Red Bull Takes a Step Back to Fix Its Wing

Although the FIA decided not to ban the overall concept, Red Bull's specific implementation still required further work. Nikolas Tombazis explained that the FIA's discussions with Red Bull's technical team, led by Pierre Wache, helped highlight the need for additional optimization, particularly following Verstappen's incidents.

Red Bull subsequently carried out further work on the system, with Wache confirming that the team addressed mechanical issues. As a result, Red Bull temporarily reverted to a conventional rear wing during the Belgian Grand Prix.

The move represented a short-term step back rather than an abandonment of the technology. Red Bull brought its rotating rear wing back successfully in Hungary, where Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar both raced with the design. That return demonstrated Red Bull's continued commitment to refining the cutting-edge concept rather than walking away from it.

Will Rotating Rear Wings Take Over the F1 Grid?

The FIA's decision to allow the “Macarena wings” to continue clears the way for potentially wider adoption across the F1 grid. McLaren has already tested its own version and is planning to deploy it on track shortly after the summer break. That means the rotating rear wing could soon become a much more common sight as teams continue searching for aerodynamic advantages under the 2026 regulations.
