Jamie Carragher has likened Viktor Gyokeres to Alan Shearer, marking a notable reversal from his earlier criticism of the Arsenal striker. The Sky Sports pundit had previously questioned Gyokeres’ quality compared to other options under Mikel Arteta, but the Sweden international’s two-goal performance in Sunday’s North London derby seems to have won Carragher over.

Carragher’s Earlier Criticism of Gyokeres

Jamie Carragher had previously voiced doubts about Viktor Gyokeres, stating as recently as December that Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz were superior options for Arsenal’s attack under Mikel Arteta.

He said at the time that Gyokeres “should not be starting” when players like Jesus and Havertz are available. Carragher argued that once Jesus regains full match fitness, he should take the starting role, describing him as a more skilled and technically proficient option. He added that Gyokeres “lacks the finesse and quality” compared to Arsenal’s other attacking options on the bench, and that the Gunners needed an upgrade in the striker position.

Derby Brace Spurs Surprising Reversal

Although Gyokeres struggled to make an impact during the first half of the season, he has since dramatically improved. His two-goal performance in Arsenal’s 4-1 thrashing of Tottenham Hotspur marked his eighth goal in his last 12 appearances for the club. Following that performance, Carragher admitted he might have misjudged the Sweden international.

He said while Gyokeres is not a world-class striker, his mentality is outstanding. Carragher praised the striker’s confidence and finishing instinct, comparing his approach to Alan Shearer. He highlighted the clinical nature of Gyokeres’ finishes, noting it was the best he had seen the player perform in an Arsenal shirt.

Gyokeres Showing Shearer-Like Qualities

Gyokeres’ resurgence has seemingly secured his place in Arteta’s starting XI, despite earlier speculation that Jesus or Havertz could claim the central striker role. Carragher commended Arteta for sticking with Gyokeres, saying the striker repaid that faith with a commanding display against Spurs.

Carragher noted that the strength and determination Gyokeres showed on the pitch reminded him of Shearer, underlining how vital the summer signing could become for Arsenal. He admitted that he had previously been surprised Gyokeres remained in the team, but his recent performances have silenced doubts.

Looking Ahead: Can Gyokeres Maintain Form?

While Gyokeres is not yet matching the prolific numbers he achieved at Sporting CP, his improved form is a significant boost for Arsenal as the season enters its crucial stages. The Gunners currently lead the Premier League by five points over Manchester City, though they have played one extra match.

Arsenal now faces another London derby, this time against Chelsea on Sunday, giving Gyokeres an opportunity to continue his hot streak and help the club push for multiple trophies this season.
