KUALA LUMPUR: Independent shuttler Goh Jin Wei will join the national team’s 10-day training camp in Denmark to prepare for the Uber Cup after initially delaying her decision due to medical concerns.

The road to the Uber Cup is rarely straightforward, and for independent shuttler Goh Jin Wei, it's been a medical marathon leading to a high-stakes audition. After navigating significant health concerns, the talented Malaysian has confirmed her participation in the national team's crucial 10-day training camp in Denmark. While a vital step, this commitment doesn't automatically secure her spot in the coveted squad.

  • Goh Jin Wei has received medical clearance, confirming her attendance at Malaysia's Uber Cup preparatory camp in Herning, Denmark.
  • Her final selection for the prestigious team event (April 24-May 3) is still under review, with her performance at the Badminton Asia Championships (BAC) being a critical factor.
  • Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) coaching director Kenneth Jonassen stresses that all players, including independents, must meet team requirements and merit for selection.
  • The mandatory Denmark camp underscores the unified approach BAM is taking for its national representatives.

Medical Clearance, Now The Real Test

It was a race against time, but Goh Jin Wei, currently ranked World No. 51, has secured the necessary medical green light and supplies to join the national contingent heading to Herning. This decisive camp is the final intensive preparation phase for the Uber Cup, a cornerstone event in the international badminton calendar. BAM secretary-general Datuk Kenny Goh confirmed that Jin Wei sought time to consult her doctor, a request that was granted before her commitment to the compulsory camp.

Jonassen's Firm Stance: Merit Over Mandate

Despite her agreement to attend the training camp, Kenneth Jonassen remains clear: a spot on the Uber Cup team is earned, not given. The coaching director reiterated the paramount importance of the "team" concept when representing Malaysia on such a grand stage. Jonassen emphasized that selection is strictly merit-based, focusing on sustained performance and the ability to contribute consistently across multiple matches, ensuring the team's long-term strength.

China Awaits: Jin Wei's Crunch Audition

Goh Jin Wei is currently honing her skills under coach Nova Armada at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM), specifically for the upcoming Badminton Asia Championships (BAC) in Ningbo. This tournament, kicking off on Tuesday, offers Jonassen a prime opportunity to assess her form and match readiness. He will be on-site with coach Tey Seu Bock, observing her performance before the April 10 deadline to finalize the Uber Cup squad. Her display in China will be pivotal.

The Men's Singles Conundrum

The situation differs significantly for men's singles players Lee Zii Jia and Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin, neither of whom qualified for the BAC. For these independent players, the ABM training ground is their sole platform to showcase form and commitment. Aidil has been consistently training at ABM since February 23. However, Lee Zii Jia's planned return on Wednesday was unfortunately sidelined due to an ankle strain, adding another layer of complexity to the Thomas Cup selections.
