Lewis Hamilton says he and Charles Leclerc need to discuss their Mexico City GP clash in person, with Ferrari aiming to establish clearer team rules ahead of the 2027 season.

Lewis Hamilton believes face-to-face discussions with Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc are necessary following their opening-lap battle at the Mexico City Grand Prix. The seven-time World Champion wants the team to learn from the incident and establish a stronger foundation for its 2027 title challenge.

Key Highlights

  • Hamilton and Leclerc are yet to discuss their Mexico GP clash in person ahead of the Sao Paulo Grand Prix.
  • Hamilton believes Ferrari could have secured a one-two finish in Mexico before their opening-lap battle disrupted the result.
  • The Briton says Ferrari has improved its performance and execution over the last four races, scoring more points than any other team.
  • Hamilton believes establishing clear rules of engagement now will help Ferrari prepare for a championship challenge in 2027.

Hamilton and Leclerc Yet to Discuss Mexico GP Incident

Hamilton started from pole position and finished second in Mexico, but believes Ferrari missed out on a potential one-two after he and Leclerc went side-by-side on the opening lap. Leclerc received a time penalty for cutting the track, while Hamilton lost ground to Max Verstappen and could not recover the position.

Speaking ahead of the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, Hamilton confirmed that he and Leclerc had not yet spoken about the incident. Leclerc had returned home following the birth of his first child, while Team Principal Fred Vasseur was also back at Ferrari's factory in Europe.

Despite the disappointment, Hamilton praised the team's recent progress, highlighting improvements in performance and race execution over the previous four rounds. He also stressed that his commitment to Ferrari and his responsibilities to the team remained unchanged.

Hamilton Sees Lessons in Ferrari's Intra-Team Battle

Although Hamilton was unhappy with how the Mexico race unfolded, he believes the experience could help Ferrari improve, particularly as the team has already fallen out of contention for this season's championships.

He suggested that having to manage an intra-team battle and address the issues it created during a season without championship pressure could provide valuable lessons.

Hamilton also emphasised that Ferrari must use the remaining races to establish clear expectations and rules between its drivers, giving the team a stronger foundation for a potential title challenge in 2027.

While he does not expect every issue to be resolved in a single meeting, Hamilton believes the experience can ultimately make Ferrari stronger heading into next season.
