Kane's Double Secures Bayern's Progression
Harry Kane was the star man as Bayern Munich clinched their place in the Champions League last-16, overcoming Union Saint-Gilloise with a 2-0 victory. The England captain opened the scoring in the 52nd minute, powerfully heading home Michael Olise's in-swinging corner. Just three minutes later, Kane was fouled inside the box by Dutch goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen, and the 33-year-old calmly converted the resulting spot-kick to double Bayern's lead.
Shortly after the hour mark, Vincent Kompany's side were reduced to ten men. Kim Min-Jae received his marching orders for a second bookable offence, a decision widely regarded as harsh after he was deemed to have cynically pulled Raul Florucz's shirt. Despite the numerical disadvantage, the Belgian side failed to threaten Bayern, who expertly controlled possession to stifle any comeback attempts. Kane, however, will lament a missed opportunity for a hat-trick when referee Rade Obrenovic awarded another penalty after Kamiel Van de Perre's handball. The former Tottenham striker opted for more power on his second attempt from the spot, lashing the ball against the crossbar – an uncharacteristic miss given he had converted his previous eight penalties this 2025-26 season.
Nevertheless, Bayern remained largely untroubled, securing their 250th win in Europe's premier club competition. This triumph guarantees Bayern's progression to the Champions League last-16, making them, alongside Arsenal, the first two teams to clinch a top-eight spot in the league phase.

Why Bayern's Ultras Were Banned
The Allianz Arena's iconic 'Sudkurve', typically home to Bayern's most fervent supporters, stood eerily empty throughout the match. This significant absence was due to a club decision earlier this month to close the entire section following extensive pyrotechnic displays during their previous Champions League home fixture against Sporting Club.
UEFA's Disciplinary Committee had fined Bayern €50,000 for repeated use of pyrotechnics in the south stand. The club had previously received a suspended ban covering approximately half of the 'Sudkurve', which was swiftly reinstated after the fiery display against the Portuguese giants on December 9. Consequently, the club took the drastic step of closing the entire section.
A club statement clarified the decision: "As tickets for FC Bayern's home games in the lower tier of the Sudkurve are not allocated by block and all 9,336 tickets are valid for blocks 109 to 117, it is technically impossible for the club to cancel only the 4,800 tickets for blocks 111 to 114. For this reason, all tickets for the Sudkurve will be cancelled in a first step, and the club will refund the ticket price to the respective purchasers. All tickets for the Sudkurve will therefore lose their validity and will not entitle holders to admission to the Allianz Arena for the game against Saint-Gilloise."

Kane Reflects on Performance
Post-match, Harry Kane offered his assessment of Bayern's display. He stated: "I thought the second half was better. We were a bit sloppy in the first half and lacked energy. We said at half time that we had to show more intensity, and we did that. We scored at the right times, got unlucky with the red card, but still controlled the game and got the three points."

What's Next for Bayern?
With their place in the last-16 now secured, Kompany may consider resting key players, including Kane, for Bayern's final league phase game against PSV on January 28. Before that, their Bundesliga campaign continues this Saturday when Augsburg visit the Allianz Arena.
