Malaysia's national doubles coaching director Herry IP is taking a gamble by forming a new men's doubles partnership between Aaron Chia and Kai Wun Tee for the 2026 Asian Games.
The decision comes after Aaron's long-time partner Soh Wooi Yik was left out of the Asian Games squad, forcing the coaching team to explore a new combination ahead of the major tournament.
Herry admitted that creating a scratch pair at this stage carries risks, but believes the pairing of Aaron and Kai Wun has the potential to challenge the world's best if they can quickly develop their understanding on court.
"We have limited time, but we have to make the best decision for the team," Herry said. He added that both players have the experience and quality needed to adapt, although building chemistry will be the biggest challenge.
Aaron, a former world No. 1 alongside Soh Wooi Yik, brings valuable experience from years of competing at the highest level, including winning major international titles. Kai Wun, meanwhile, has shown steady progress and is regarded as one of Malaysia's promising doubles players.
The new partnership will now focus on improving their communication, movement and tactical coordination before the Asian Games, where Malaysia will be aiming for a strong performance in the men's doubles event.
Herry acknowledged that established partnerships usually have an advantage because of their familiarity and understanding, but believes the new pairing can make an impact if they adapt quickly.
With the Asian Games approaching, Aaron and Kai Wun face a race against time to turn an experimental partnership into a competitive force on the international stage.
