Honda will have only Luca Marini representing its factory team at Phillip Island after Joan Mir was ruled out of the Australian Grand Prix due to ongoing health issues, while test rider Aleix Espargaró prepares for arm surgery.

Honda faces another challenge in its difficult MotoGP season after confirming that Joan Mir will miss the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island as he continues to recover from an unexplained health problem.

The decision leaves Luca Marini as the Japanese manufacturer's only factory rider for the weekend, with Honda unable to call on its usual replacement options.

Mir has been absent since retiring from the San Marino Grand Prix on September 13. Despite working closely with his medical team, the 2020 MotoGP world champion has yet to receive a clear diagnosis for his condition, which has involved abnormal blood parameters and symptoms affecting his energy levels and performance.

Honda confirmed that Mir was not ready to return for the Australian round, extending his spell on the sidelines. His continued absence remains a concern for the team, particularly as the season enters its final stages.

The situation has become more complicated with Honda test rider Aleix Espargaró also unavailable. The Spaniard stepped in for Mir at the Indonesian Grand Prix before travelling to Sepang for two days of testing on Honda's 2027 850cc prototype, the RC214V.

However, Espargaró's longstanding problem with chronic exertional compartment syndrome, commonly known as arm pump, has worsened to the point that surgery is required. He is scheduled to undergo the procedure in Barcelona in the coming days, ruling him out as an option for Phillip Island.

Honda's limited rider availability adds to the manufacturer's difficulties this season. With Mir still recovering and Espargaró preparing for surgery, Marini will shoulder the factory team's racing responsibilities alone at one of MotoGP's most demanding circuits.

The team's wider rider situation has also been affected by previous setbacks, including Takaaki Nakagami's crash at the Japanese Grand Prix. These absences have further complicated Honda's efforts to maintain a consistent presence on the grid.

For Marini, the Australian Grand Prix will present an opportunity to gather valuable data and deliver a strong result for Honda under difficult circumstances. For the manufacturer, however, the immediate priority will be managing the weekend with limited resources while awaiting further updates on Mir's recovery.

Honda will be hoping for positive news on Mir's condition and Espargaró's return to fitness as it works towards restoring a full rider lineup and improving its competitiveness in MotoGP.
