Malaysia’s Hoo Pang Ron and Lai Pei Jing continued their impressive rise as a new partnership, reaching the Macau Open mixed doubles semi-finals after a dominant quarter-final win. They now face a major test against top seeds Jiang Zhen Bang and Wei Ya Xin.

Hoo Pang Ron and Lai Pei Jing delivered a breakthrough performance at the Macau Open, powering into the mixed doubles semi-finals and marking their strongest result since forming their partnership last month.

The Malaysian pair, currently ranked world No. 113, have endured a mixed start since teaming up at the Malaysia Masters in May. Prior to this week, they had struggled to advance beyond the second round in four consecutive tournaments, making their run in Macau a significant step forward.

For Pang Ron, the result marks his first semi-final appearance since reaching the China Masters final in November 2024 alongside Cheng Su Yin. He also previously made the Macau Open semi-finals that same year. For Pei Jing, it is her first semi-final since last November’s Korea Masters, when she partnered Jimmy Wong.

Their progress in Macau was highlighted by a convincing quarter-final victory over South Korea’s Cho Song Hyun and Jeong Na Eun. The Malaysian duo needed just 30 minutes to secure a 21-11, 21-13 win at the Macao East Asian Games Dome, showcasing strong coordination and control throughout the match.

The result underlines a growing chemistry between the pair, who appear to be adapting quickly after recent partner changes.

Their reward is a likely semi-final clash with top seeds and world No. 2 Jiang Zhen Bang and Wei Ya Xin of China, one of the strongest mixed doubles pairs on the circuit. The Chinese duo are favourites to advance, setting up a major test for the Malaysians.

The head-to-head narrative adds extra intrigue. Pei Jing has previously struggled against the Chinese pair, suffering multiple defeats with former partner Tan Kian Meng. However, Pang Ron brings positive memories, having previously helped pull off an upset victory over Jiang and Wei during the 2024 China Masters run with Cheng Su Yin.

That mix of contrasting history sets up an intriguing tactical challenge, with both Malaysians carrying different experiences into the potential showdown.

Regardless of the outcome, their run to the semi-finals represents a clear breakthrough for the new partnership and offers a strong platform as they continue building momentum on the international stage.
