National men's singles shuttler Wan Arif Wan Junaidi has been handed what could be his final opportunity to prove he deserves to remain in Malaysia's national badminton squad, with next week's Japan Open likely to play a key role in determining his future.
The 23-year-old has endured a challenging campaign and has struggled to produce the consistent results expected of him. His lack of progress has prompted the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) to review his position, with team management expected to assess his performances after the Japan Open.
Wan Arif has managed just a handful of encouraging results this year, falling short of expectations despite being given regular opportunities on the international circuit. With younger players continuing to push for places in the national setup, the pressure is firmly on him to deliver.

BAM coaching director Rexy Mainaky acknowledged that Wan Arif remains a talented player but stressed that performances must improve if he hopes to keep his place in the national programme.
"He has to show he still deserves to be in the team. We cannot keep waiting forever," Rexy said, adding that every player is expected to justify their selection through results and commitment.
The Japan Open therefore represents a pivotal moment in Wan Arif's career. A strong performance could strengthen his case to remain in the national squad, while another early exit may leave BAM with little choice but to consider changes.
With competition for places becoming increasingly intense, the tournament in Tokyo could prove to be a defining week for Wan Arif as he attempts to revive his career and secure his future with the national team.
