Johann Zarco has taken a significant step towards his MotoGP return after deciding against knee surgery, with the LCR Honda rider now targeting a comeback in September.
The Frenchman underwent a medical assessment with specialist Dr. Bertrand Sonnery-Cottet in Lyon on July 1, where further examinations revealed his recovery had progressed better than initially expected following his crash in Catalunya.
Early MRI scans were conducted while Zarco's knee was still heavily swollen, making it difficult for doctors to determine the full extent of the damage. As the inflammation subsided, follow-up assessments painted a more encouraging picture.
Doctors confirmed that Zarco's medial collateral ligament (MCL) is healing well, while his posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), which was initially feared to be torn, is also recovering positively. However, his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) remains torn.
Zarco had spent the past few weeks waiting for a burn injury to heal before considering surgery. During that period, he continued training and rehabilitation, making steady progress that ultimately led his medical team to recommend a non-surgical approach.
Impressed by the rider's recovery, doctors advised Zarco to continue with a rehabilitation programme focused on strengthening and restoring knee function instead of undergoing an operation.
The 35-year-old will continue to be monitored through further medical assessments, with the goal of returning to MotoGP racing in September if his recovery remains on track.
LCR Honda welcomed the positive update, expressing confidence in Zarco's rehabilitation and looking forward to his return later this season.
