Johann Zarco enjoyed a promising start to the Malaysian Grand Prix weekend at Sepang, showing competitive pace across Friday and Saturday before an unfortunate technical issue forced him to retire from Sunday's main race.
The Castrol Honda LCR rider began the weekend positively, finishing Friday's opening day in 11th place. Comfortable on his Honda from the first morning session, Zarco consistently featured among the competitive positions on the timesheets at a circuit he particularly enjoys.
"It was a good day. I felt comfortable on the bike straight away and we were competitive from the start."
His positive feeling continued into the afternoon Practice session, where he showed promising pace and looked on course to secure a direct place in Q2. However, a crash in the closing minutes while pushing for a faster lap prevented him from completing his final time attack. Fortunately, the Frenchman escaped without injury but had to settle for a place in Q1.
"It's a shame about the crash because I think we had the potential to be in the top 10."
Zarco bounced back on Saturday, successfully progressing through Q1 before securing eighth place on the grid for both the Sprint and Sunday's main race. It was an encouraging result for the Frenchman, who was pleased with the team's progress and the speed shown during qualifying.
"I'm happy with today. Qualifying was positive, we had good speed and secured a solid eighth place on the grid for both races."
Starting from the third row, Zarco made a solid start to the Sprint and initially felt comfortable on the bike. However, rain arrived during the early stages, making the conditions increasingly difficult and forcing riders to manage their pace.
"I was feeling quite good in the Sprint, but when the rain started, I regretted not taking more risks earlier on."
As the conditions deteriorated, overtaking became more challenging. Zarco eventually crossed the finish line in 10th place, narrowly missing out on the points despite showing competitive speed earlier in the race.
"Once we had to slow down because of the conditions, overtaking became more difficult. In the end, I finished 10th, just missing out on the points."
Heading into Sunday's main race, Zarco was determined to build on his strong qualifying performance and fight for a competitive result. Starting eighth on the grid, the Honda LCR rider made another good start, quickly gaining positions and finding his rhythm as he battled with his rivals for a place inside the top five.
However, his hopes of securing a strong finish were cut short in the closing stages when a technical issue affected his bike. With the problem still under investigation, Zarco was forced to return to the pits and retire from the race.
"Unfortunately, we had to retire due to a technical issue, but these things can happen."
Despite the disappointing end to Sunday's race, Zarco remained positive about the progress made throughout the Malaysian GP weekend. His competitive Friday pace, eighth-place qualifying result and strong race performance before the technical issue offered encouraging signs for the team moving forward.
"I'm fine. I was having a good race, and we've shown strong pace throughout the weekend."
"Overall, I'm happy with the work we've done here in Malaysia. We've made some solid improvements, and the goal now is to keep this positive momentum going."
