Portugal manager Jorge Jesus has addressed the growing tension surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo after the legendary forward was left as an unused substitute against Norway. Despite a perfect start to their Nations League campaign, the Selecao camp has been rocked by reports of a rift between the veteran captain and his head coach.

The storm surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo and the Portugal national team reached a boiling point this week, with manager Jorge Jesus finally addressing the decision to leave the superstar on the bench against Norway and the fallout that followed. Despite Portugal's perfect start to their Nations League campaign, the controversy has taken much of the attention away from their results.

Key Highlights

  • Cristiano Ronaldo was an unused substitute during Portugal's Nations League clash against Norway.
  • Manager Jorge Jesus admitted he made a "mistake" by asking Ronaldo to warm up for an extended period without bringing him on.
  • Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) President Pedro Proença held talks with both Ronaldo and Jesus.
  • Jesus strongly denied reports that Ronaldo refused to train, explaining that the forward was following an alternative training programme.

Ronaldo's Frustration After Being Left on the Bench

At 41 years old, with 234 caps and 146 international goals, Cristiano Ronaldo remains a central figure for Portugal. His frustration after being left as an unused substitute against Norway therefore quickly became a major talking point.

Portugal secured a 2-1 victory over Norway after previously beating Wales 1-0, but the attention after the match centred on Ronaldo's absence from the pitch. Jorge Jesus explained that he had initially agreed with Ronaldo that the forward would not feature in either the Norway or Denmark fixtures.

Having worked closely with Ronaldo for a year, Jesus said he had a strong understanding of the player's physical condition and preparation. However, the circumstances of the Norway match ultimately led Jesus to reconsider his original plan.

Jesus Admits: "I Made a Mistake"

Jesus accepted responsibility for the way he handled Ronaldo's warm-up during the match.

"I had agreed with him that he wouldn't play the first two matches, but I thought during the match that I might need him in the final minutes," Jesus explained. "But the match dictated something else entirely, and I didn't bring him on. That's the truth."

The Portugal boss also acknowledged that asking Ronaldo to warm up for 20 or 30 minutes without eventually bringing him onto the pitch was a mistake.

"No player is happy when they warm up... Least of all Cris," Jesus said.

He recognised Ronaldo's competitive nature and dedication, adding that he should have waited around 15 minutes before sending the forward to warm up to avoid creating unnecessary frustration.

FPF President Steps In Amid Training Rumours

The situation prompted Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) President Pedro Proença to hold direct discussions with both Ronaldo and Jesus. The meeting came amid reports that Ronaldo had allegedly refused to take part in team training. However, Jesus firmly rejected those claims.

He explained that Ronaldo, along with players including Francisco Conceicao and Joao Felix, was following an alternative training programme involving strength training and mobilisation exercises at the team hotel.

"He didn't refuse to train. That's impossible. That's not Cris," Jesus said, defending Ronaldo's professionalism and commitment to the national team.

Portugal's Perfect Start Continues

While the Ronaldo saga has dominated the headlines, Portugal have made an impressive start to their Nations League campaign. The defending champions currently sit top of Group 4 with six points from two matches, following victories over Wales and Norway. Norway and Denmark are both on three points, while Wales remain without a point at the bottom of the group.

Portugal's next challenge is Denmark, with Jesus now tasked with keeping the squad focused and ensuring the off-field controversy does not disrupt their momentum as they pursue another Nations League triumph.
