Veteran Malaysian shuttler Cheam June Wei says he is prepared to step in for the Thomas Cup team as Malaysia finalises its squad ahead of the Denmark finals, with selection hinging on fitness and form.

Malaysian men’s singles player Cheam June Wei says he is ready to join the national squad for the upcoming Thomas Cup finals in Horsens, Denmark, if he is selected. At 29 years old, the experienced professional is in contention for Malaysia’s fourth singles spot after the core trio of Leong Jun Hao, Justin Hoh and Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin were named for the team.

June Wei has not yet received official confirmation from the Badminton Association of Malaysia on his inclusion, but he says he is fully prepared if a late call comes. “There has been no communication yet, but if the opportunity comes, I’m ready,” he said, adding that he hopes the coaches will consider him for the squad.

The possibility of drafting June Wei or world No. 79 Eogene Ewe into the squad arises mainly because of lingering uncertainty over the fitness of Leong Zii Jia. Zii Jia, currently ranked world No. 83, has been struggling with an ankle injury and missed recent training sessions, leaving his participation in doubt as the team approaches the April 10 nomination deadline.

June Wei has represented Malaysia at previous Thomas Cup finals, competing in both the 2020 and 2024 editions. He believes his experience at this level could be valuable to the team. “I have stayed committed to my training and kept myself in the best shape possible,” June Wei said. “If selected, my experience could help as I know what to expect at this level.”

With only days remaining before the squad must be finalised, June Wei says he is focused on staying prepared and hopes the decision will go his way. “There are only a few days before the decision needs to be made, so I’m just hoping for the best for myself,” he added.
