Beyond the Hardwood: KAT's Unrivaled Community Spirit
Karl-Anthony Towns has consistently demonstrated a profound commitment to uplifting communities, both locally in New York and internationally. His multifaceted approach to philanthropy has now been officially recognized by the NBA and NBPA, highlighting the genuine spirit of giving that defines his character. In honor of his incredible efforts, the NBA and the NBPA Foundation will donate $20,000 to the Dominican Women’s Development Center, a testament to his impactful partnerships.
Warming Hearts in the Big Apple: The Coat Drive
This past winter, Towns launched a digital coat drive that made a tangible difference for New York families battling the cold. In a powerful collaboration with Operation Warm and Target, he personally donated 500 coats, with an additional 162 contributed through his partnership. These vital items were distributed to SCO Family of Services, a partner of the Garden of Dreams Foundation. Before a special “Celebrating the Black Experience” game, Towns even met with some of the youth who received the coats, solidifying his hands-on approach to community engagement.
Global Impact: Building Futures in the Dominican Republic
Beyond his work in the five boroughs, Towns has remained deeply connected to his Dominican heritage and a champion for global youth development. He played a pivotal role in securing a massive $3 million investment for a cutting-edge basketball facility in the Dominican Republic, partnering with Go Ministries. This initiative will provide invaluable training and recreational opportunities for young athletes across the region.
The Knicks star pledged $1 million to kickstart the project in 2024. Prior to the current NBA season, he even traveled to the Dominican Republic to meet with President Luis Abinader, successfully fundraising an additional $2 million towards the facility, demonstrating his unwavering dedication to empowering the next generation.
A Voice for Justice: KAT's Advocacy
Towns' commitment extends into the vital arena of social justice. As an active board member of the National Basketball Social Justice Coalition (NBSJC), he leverages his platform to advocate for meaningful change. He was also instrumental in the 2025-2026 NBA/NBPA Pioneer’s campaign, honoring trailblazers like former New York Knick Nathaniel “Sweetwater” Clifton, contributing to digital storytelling and engaging with award recipients.
“Giving back to the community is very important to me,” Towns stated, highlighting his passion. “Partnering with the Dominican Women’s Development Center in New York City will provide daycare for the mothers and kids as well as mental health and healthcare support to new moms and their children. I am incredibly grateful to receive this award.”
A Consistent Giver: Beyond the Spotlight
Even while on road trips, Towns finds ways to connect and give back. In December, during a visit to Minnesota, he hosted a private movie screening for over 100 youth from HopeKids. This organization provides critical support to families with children facing cancer and other life-threatening medical conditions, showcasing Towns' ongoing commitment to communities where he's played throughout his career.
A Nod to the Past and Future: Previous Honors
This marks Karl-Anthony Towns' second Community Assist Award, having previously earned the honor in November 2021. Furthermore, he was recognized as the prestigious Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion in 2024, cementing his legacy as a leader both on and off the court. The NBA Cares Bob Lanier Community Assist Award itself carries significant weight, honoring the late NBA legend Bob Lanier, whose kindness and generosity left an indelible mark globally. Towns, like Lanier, is paving the way for future generations of athletes to impact their communities positively.
