Karen Khachanov survived a gruelling five-set battle against Learner Tien to book his place in the US Open quarter-finals, overcoming the young American 7-5, 4-6, 6-7(6), 6-1, 6-4 in a contest that lasted almost four hours.
The victory sends the world No. 50 into his seventh Grand Slam quarter-final and keeps alive his hopes of making another deep run at Flushing Meadows.
Khachanov made the stronger start, taking the opening set 7-5, but Tien quickly responded. The 20-year-old American levelled the match in the second set before edging a tight third-set tie-break to move within one set of victory.
Rather than allowing the setback to derail him, Khachanov responded emphatically in the fourth set. The Russian raised his intensity, took control of the rallies and raced through the set 6-1 to force a decider.
The final set remained closely contested, but Khachanov's experience eventually proved decisive. He found the crucial breakthrough before holding his nerve to close out the match and complete a hard-fought comeback.
Khachanov later described the contest as a "crazy match", with Tien's ability to chase down seemingly winning shots making every rally difficult.
"He gets one extra ball back," Khachanov said, highlighting the defensive qualities that kept him under constant pressure.
Tien's performance was nevertheless one of the biggest positives of the match. The young American repeatedly frustrated Khachanov with his movement and defence, showing that he can compete with established players on the Grand Slam stage.
Tien had been bidding to become the youngest American man to reach the US Open quarter-finals since Andy Roddick in 2002. Although he ultimately fell short, his run represents another important step in what is shaping up to be a promising career.
For Khachanov, the victory is an especially significant turnaround after a difficult North American hard-court swing. He entered the US Open with an 0-3 record during the build-up to the tournament, but has now put together a run that has completely changed the mood around his campaign.
"When you are not playing well, you have to try to stay ready for the next one," Khachanov said.
His ability to remain patient and continue working through a difficult period has now paid off with another Grand Slam quarter-final appearance.
Khachanov will next face 28th seed Alexander Blockx for a place in the semi-finals.
The Russian has already shown that he can produce his best tennis in New York, having reached the semi-finals at the tournament previously. After surviving one of the toughest tests of his campaign, he will now look to take another step towards the final four.
