Qualifying Drama: A Missed Opportunity for Pole
Antonelli arrived at the Red Bull Ring with undeniable momentum, dominating both Friday practice sessions and looking like a strong contender for pole position. He even held provisional pole before a critical misjudgment in the final moments of qualifying.
Believing Max Verstappen's late crash had triggered double-waved yellow flags, Antonelli aborted his final flying lap. In reality, it was only a single-waved yellow, an oversight that allowed teammate George Russell to snatch pole. Antonelli, gracious in defeat, admitted he felt "a bit tense driving wise" and "not as free" despite his pace. This error alone likely cost him a front-row start.
Red Bull Ring Mayhem: Antonelli's Race Start Nightmare
Starting from P4, Antonelli's race began with an aggressive, albeit messy, charge. He went off track not once, but three times within the opening two laps. His ambition at Turn 1 and Turn 3 on the opening lap saw him riding kerbs and using escape roads, immediately costing him valuable ground.
A determined overtake attempt on Charles Leclerc for P3 at Turn 1 on lap two also went awry. Despite momentarily getting ahead, he again ran wide, forcing him to concede the position. This allowed Max Verstappen to capitalize, dropping Antonelli to P5 by the end of the second lap—a far cry from where his qualifying pace suggested he should have been.
The young Mercedes driver openly admitted his difficult start. "First two laps were really bad for me and then I really struggled with the brakes and I just lost a lot of time because I started to do mistakes."
The Comeback Kid: A Podium Forged in Fire
Despite the qualifying disappointment and chaotic opening laps, Antonelli showcased the speed that has made him the championship leader. He gradually found his rhythm, delivering excellent pace during the second and third stints to fight his way back through the field. His impressive recovery ultimately secured a hard-earned P3 finish.
Antonelli joined race winner George Russell and Max Verstappen on the podium, turning what could have been a disastrous afternoon into another valuable haul of championship points.
Wolff's Verdict: A Baptism of Fire for Mercedes' Prodigy
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff was candid in his assessment, pinpointing the opening corners as the decisive moment that cost Antonelli a shot at victory. "The first few corners, this is where the race got lost," said Wolff. "Full attack mode, missing braking in Turn 1, missing braking in Turn 3, missing braking in Turn 4."
However, Wolff also viewed the mistakes as part of the young driver's development rather than a cause for concern. "As I said, this is exactly what I expect from him. Like yesterday, the yellow, that's never going to happen to him in his life again. To not see whether it's a double yellow or a single yellow."
"In the same way today, he just wanted to be right there on George. He wanted to be right behind him and that cost him a position or two."
