The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) is bringing back two familiar faces to strengthen its national coaching structure, with former internationals Teo Kok Siang and Wong Pei Tty returning to the setup from September 1.
Kok Siang, 36, has been appointed as a mixed doubles coach, while former world No. 1 Wong Pei Tty, 44, will join the women's doubles coaching team and work alongside head coach Rosman Razak.
Both coaches have previously worked with BAM and bring valuable experience from their time with the national programme.
Kok Siang spent five years with BAM from 2017, working across the junior and senior doubles programmes before leaving in 2022 to coach professional players. During his time outside the national setup, he guided several established pairs, including Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Lai, as well as men's doubles combination Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani.
His return comes after the departure of mixed doubles head coach Nova Widianto from BAM. Kok Siang will join the existing mixed doubles coaching team, with the association expected to announce the new head of the department at a later date.
Pei Tty also has strong ties with BAM. The former women's doubles world No. 1 represented Malaysia at the 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing Olympics before moving into coaching.
During her previous coaching stint, which ended in 2020, Pei Tty played an important role in the development of Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah, helping establish the partnership that would go on to become one of Malaysia's leading women's doubles pairs.
Her return gives BAM another experienced figure to help develop the country's women's doubles players and strengthen the coaching structure around Rosman's team.
BAM said the appointments are part of its ongoing effort to improve the national coaching system and enhance player development and international performance. The association believes the pair's previous experience within the programme will allow them to settle in quickly and contribute from the outset.
Both coaches will report to national doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky when they officially begin their duties on September 1.
The appointments also underline BAM's preference for experienced local coaches as it looks to strengthen its doubles programmes. With Kok Siang returning to the mixed doubles setup and Pei Tty taking on a role in women's doubles, the national body will hope their familiarity with the players and system can translate into stronger results on the international stage.
