Diogo Moreira claimed a surprise MotoGP podium after final-lap track limits penalties demoted Jorge Martin and Enea Bastianini in a dramatic Japanese GP Sprint.

Diogo Moreira secured a surprise second-place finish in the Japanese Grand Prix Sprint after late track limits penalties dramatically reshaped the podium at Motegi.

The LCR Honda rider had crossed the finish line in fourth, but both Enea Bastianini and Jorge Martin were later handed one-position penalties for exceeding track limits on the final lap, promoting Moreira to second and giving the Brazilian his first MotoGP podium.

The drama unfolded at Turn 10, where Bastianini and Martin both ran onto the green track limits area while battling for position. Under MotoGP regulations, exceeding the limits on the final lap automatically results in a one-position penalty, regardless of whether the rider had gained an advantage.

For Bastianini, the decision was particularly frustrating. The Tech3 rider had fought his way forward from seventh on the grid and appeared set to claim third after a strong late-race battle with Martin.

The Italian argued that he had gained no advantage from running wide and believed he had actually lost ground by dropping out of Martin’s slipstream.

“I didn’t gain any advantage,” Bastianini said, while questioning whether the penalty was fair given the wide lines used by MotoGP bikes through the corner.

Martin also had plenty to reflect on after losing his second-place finish.

The Aprilia rider had initially looked comfortable in second, but his rear tyre deteriorated badly during the closing stages. Bastianini was able to close the gap and launch a challenge, setting up the dramatic final-lap battle.

Martin ultimately admitted that his track limits mistake was his own fault and acknowledged the impact it had on the championship fight.

“I’m angry with myself for touching the green,” Martin said, admitting that he had effectively given away two additional points to championship leader Marc Marquez, who won the Sprint.

While Bastianini and Martin were battling ahead, Moreira found himself in the perfect position to benefit from their mistakes.

The Pro Honda LCR rider was following the pair closely when he saw both riders run wide at Turn 10. Moreira wisely avoided making the same mistake and crossed the line in fourth before the penalties were applied.

The subsequent sanctions moved him up to second, handing the Brazilian a breakthrough MotoGP podium and adding another major highlight to his rookie season.

For Moreira, it was a reward for staying composed when the battle ahead became increasingly tense. For Martin and Bastianini, it was a reminder that even the smallest mistake can have major consequences in MotoGP, particularly on the final lap.

With the Sprint podium decided by the narrowest of margins, the incident added another layer of drama to an already eventful Japanese Grand Prix weekend.
