Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei is urging Malaysia’s coaching team to start strategic preparations immediately, emphasizing focus and meticulous planning ahead of the Thomas Cup in Denmark.

Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei is calling for early, focused preparation from Malaysia’s national badminton team ahead of the 2026 Thomas Cup in Horsens, Denmark. Now chairman of the BAM Performance Committee, he is emphasizing strategy and planning well before the first shuttle is served.

Chong Wei highlighted that Malaysia knows its group and likely opponents, making now the ideal time to analyze strengths and weaknesses for both its own players and rival teams. With the tournament set from April 24 to May 3, he stressed that proactive preparation could provide a decisive advantage.

Malaysia’s Group B campaign is expected to hinge on its matchup with Japan, one of the competition’s strongest squads. The national coaching team, led by Kenneth Jonassen and Tey Seu Bock for singles and Rexy Mainaky with Herry Iman Pierngadi for doubles, will need to carefully map out lineups and strategies to optimize performance.

While the official squad is yet to be confirmed, Malaysia is expected to field experienced singles players like Lee Zii Jia, supported by Leong Jun Hao, Justin Hoh, and Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin. In doubles, the leading pair of Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik is expected to be supported by Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun and Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani.

Japan’s lineup poses a significant challenge, featuring world No. 9 singles player Kodai Naraoka and top doubles pair Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi. Other notable players include Kenta Nishimoto, Swiss Open champion Yushi Tanaka, and Koki Watanabe, along with promising doubles pairs such as Kakeru Kumagai-Hiroki Nishi and Takumi Nomura-Yuichi Shimogami. Malaysia’s coaching staff will need to carefully study each opponent to find potential tactical advantages.

Chong Wei emphasized that success in the Thomas Cup will depend on preparation and focus rather than results alone. “We must prepare as well as possible and focus on every match. Win or lose, we set that aside first; what matters is the preparation and focus on the matches,” he said, highlighting the importance of a process-oriented mindset in high-pressure team events.
