Following Malaysia’s recent badminton successes, Lee Chong Wei has reminded players to stay confident through setbacks, while urging young talents to keep working hard as they prepare for the senior level.

Former world No. 1 Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei has urged Malaysian badminton players to remain confident regardless of their results, reminding them that setbacks are part of the journey towards success.

In a message shared on social media, the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) performance committee chairman reflected on his own experience of painful defeats and encouraged players not to let disappointing results undermine their belief in themselves.

“Never lose confidence, whether you win or lose,” Lee said, stressing the importance of maintaining a positive mindset throughout a player’s career.

His message comes after a successful period for Malaysian badminton, with Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah winning the Denmark Open women’s doubles title, while junior pair Low Zi Yu and Genevie Lim made history by claiming the girls’ doubles crown at the World Junior Championships in Cairo.

Pearly and Thinaah’s victory highlighted the value of teamwork, confidence and determination, while Zi Yu and Genevie’s achievement ended Malaysia’s long wait for a girls’ doubles world junior title. The results have provided encouragement for Malaysian badminton at both senior and junior levels.

However, Lee stressed that winning titles is only part of the journey, particularly for young players hoping to establish themselves among the senior ranks. He urged junior champions to continue improving and remain dedicated as they take the next steps in their careers.

He also praised Pearly and Thinaah for their fighting spirit, understanding and confidence on court, qualities he believes younger players can learn from as they work towards competing at the highest level.

For Lee, recent victories are encouraging signs of progress, but sustained success requires consistent effort and the ability to overcome difficult periods. Young shuttlers must continue developing their skills and mental strength rather than becoming complacent after a major achievement.

He also reminded the players that they can count on the support of Malaysian fans, whether they are celebrating victories or struggling through disappointing results.

Lee’s message serves as a reminder that progress in badminton is rarely straightforward. By staying confident, learning from defeats and continuing to work hard, Malaysian players can build on their recent successes and strengthen the country’s prospects for the future.
