Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia will begin his Swiss Open campaign from the qualifying rounds, marking his first appearance in this stage in several years. The tournament could prove crucial for the former All England champion as he works to regain form and fitness ahead of the upcoming Thomas Cup.

Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia is set to return to action at the upcoming Swiss Open, where the former All England champion faces an unusual challenge of starting his campaign in the qualifying rounds.

Currently ranked world No. 64, Lee has not competed in tournament qualifiers for several years. His first match is scheduled for March 10 against Japan’s Minoru Koga, who is ranked No. 54 in the world. A victory would move Lee one step closer to the main draw, though he would still need to win another match against either Taiwan’s Wang Po Wei or Croatia’s Aria Dinata.

Should Lee successfully progress through the qualifiers, he is expected to meet Singapore’s Jason Teh in the first round of the main draw. The demanding route means the Malaysian will have to overcome several obstacles before he can begin a deeper run in the tournament.

Lee’s return comes after a challenging start to the season that has been affected by injuries. Since January, he has competed in several tournaments including the Malaysia Open, India Open, Indonesia Masters, and Thailand Masters. His best result came in Thailand, where he reached the quarter-finals before being forced to retire during his match against Indonesia’s Alwi Farhan due to injury.

The injury setback also led to his withdrawal from the German Open, raising questions about his physical condition. The Swiss Open therefore presents an important opportunity for Lee to rebuild his rhythm and demonstrate that he is fully fit to compete.

His performance will also be closely watched with the Thomas Cup approaching. The prestigious team event will take place from April 24 to May 3 in Horsens, Denmark, and Lee is expected to play a key role in Malaysia’s campaign.

A strong showing in Switzerland could provide valuable match practice and confidence ahead of the team competition. As one of Malaysia’s leading men’s singles players, Lee’s form will be important to the country’s hopes of performing well on the international stage.

Other Malaysian players will also compete at the Swiss Open. Justin Hoh is set to face France’s Arnaud Merkle in the men’s singles, while women’s singles player K. Letshanaa will take on Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan.

For Lee, the tournament represents more than just another stop on the BWF World Tour. It is a chance to rebuild momentum and prove that he can return to top form after a difficult period.
