Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia continued to build momentum at the Arctic Open, defeating Taiwan’s Su Li Yang in straight games to reach the men’s singles quarter-finals in Finland.
The Malaysian secured a 21-17, 21-12 victory in 46 minutes at the Vantaan Energia Areena, delivering a composed performance to move one step closer to his best World Tour result of the season.
The win marks Zii Jia’s first World Tour quarter-final appearance since the Canada Open in July, offering another encouraging sign as he works to regain consistency following a series of injury and fitness setbacks.
His next challenge will be against France’s Christo Popov, with a place in the semi-finals at stake. Zii Jia holds a 2-0 advantage in their previous meetings, but the Frenchman is expected to provide a stern test.
Although Zii Jia has previously trained with Popov and his older brother, Toma Junior Popov, their development since those sessions means past encounters may offer limited clues about the upcoming match.
Christo has established himself as one of Europe’s leading young badminton players and was part of France’s historic run to the Thomas Cup final earlier this year alongside his brother. His recent progress makes him a dangerous opponent for Zii Jia, who will need to maintain the level of control and aggression shown against Su.
For Zii Jia, advancing to the semi-finals would represent more than another positive result. It would provide valuable evidence that he is moving towards sustained competitiveness after a difficult period and give him another opportunity to rebuild confidence against top-level opposition.
Meanwhile, Malaysia’s mixed doubles pair Jimmy Wong and Cheng Su Yin suffered a second-round exit after losing to Japan’s Akira Koga and Natsu Saito.
The Malaysians, ranked world No. 58, took the opening game 21-19 but were unable to maintain their advantage, eventually falling 7-21, 11-21 in the next two games.
The defeat ends their Arctic Open campaign despite encouraging results at recent tournaments, including a semi-final appearance at the Japan Open and a quarter-final finish at the Korea Masters.
Wong and Cheng will now turn their attention to the Denmark Open, where they are scheduled to face fellow Malaysians Chen Tang Jie and Chan Wen Tse in the opening round.
While the mixed doubles pair will look to bounce back at their next event, the spotlight remains on Zii Jia as he attempts to turn his latest victory into a deeper run at the Arctic Open.
